I'll jump in. I'm usually the one asking questions. This should be refreshing. I'll answer anything.

    Alabama? Seriously???
I know, right? I'm actually really liking it here. It helps that I have reconnected with a former roommate and dear friend. She has three kids and a husband now. I'm living two doors down from them for the month. The kids love me, and I love them.
The guys in the construction crew I'm working with are pretty cool, too.

This is one of my favorite ones. I like it because it's fun. It's plaid on one side and solid black on the other, so you can tie it like I did here, with the loop black and the rest of the tie plaid (or a plaid loop on a black tie--not recommended for "black tie" events), you can do it all one color, or even do one wing plaid and one wing black.

How do/did you find the people to stay with? And aren't/weren't you nervous that they could be full of shit and setting you up (meaning, when you arrive/arrived they wouldn't answer their phone, etc. or not even live in that place or do it for the lulz)?

Um, ok, you talk about co-ordinating throw pillows and bowties but you only just discovered you were gay last week??

I've known I was gay all my life. Just came to terms with it of recent. But we shan't usurp 19c79's forum to discuss me, this thread, afterall should be about him.

So 19c79, what has been your favorite piece to report on and why?

I'm shooting for March for LA.

    You mean 19c79 and 19c79? ;-)

Glad you liked the tie and my pup's pillow.

I've done it through three main channels.

    1) http://www.couchsurfing.org

    2) Churches (sometimes I stay in the parish house, sometimes a member of the congregation offers to host me).

    3) Friends of friends, and now, friends of people who have hosted me after meeting through one of the channels above.

There have also been offers from people on facebook who have found me through CNN, etc. In New Orleans I'll stay with Scruffypup--he'll be my first RJ host.

I suppose there's a risk that someone could be setting me up, but frankly it has not been much of a concern. I still think there's more good people in the world than there's bad people. If someone were to do that, I'm confident I could find alternate arrangements.

That's the way to think, and why I have been following you on facebook.

I just know that there are some jerks out there, and would love nothing better than to ruin a good thing that you are doing.

    Both.

Walk-related, my favorite would have to be the one about a gay couple with six adopted children I met in Richmond. It's on page 2 of this thread:
    http://www.realjock.com/gayforums/1669682

The other category is a lot harder to answer... This one comes to mind. It's about "failed" adoptions, dealing with a difficult topic, but allowed me to interview some remarkably strong people: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2010/05/06/who-adopts-a-rejected-kid.html

As far as op-eds go, I'm still glad I wrote this one, back in 2005, for the Washington Blade (the gay newspaper in DC), about Che Guevara and how annoyed I was by t-shirts with his face on them being the latest trend (at the time) among gay men: http://bit.ly/vZH4uq

    1.- Nope.

2.- It will get cold. It was hot as hell in July. I dealt with it. I'll deal with the cold.

    3.- I carry a 60 lb backpack... Can't really jog with that.

What do you do to ensure your safety? -For example, do you pick a time to stop/start walking, carry a weapon, etc

I try, as much as possible, to avoid walking at night. In some parts, though, it's really not that dangerous to do this. I carry a knife and mace, because I couldn't get a gun permit in NY. I'm considering getting one here in Alabama.

I got a grant from Arizona State University that paid for about half the budget. The rest is my savings (which are running low), small donations people have made, and now, my construction job here in Tuscaloosa for the next month.

Just realized I missed this. So far, yes. It is a great website. There was one instance when I was concerned, but it turned out well.
