Yet Another Teacher in Trouble Over Anti-Gay Remarks

"Missouri math teacher Jim Whitney. The Joplin High School teacher is in trouble after making a comment on the Facebook page of a former student last week who posted a link to a news article about a gay 15-year old from Canada who committed suicide after being bullied.

"Moral of the story: Don't be gay" was Whitney's comment to the student's post, the Joplin Globe reports. When questioned by another user on the same thread about how many more cases of suicide will it take for people to pay attention, Whitney allegedly retorted, "11-13 ought to do it." Although Whitney released an emailed apology on Monday, he could not be reached for further comment and the Joplin School Board is currently undertaking an investigation regarding the incident. "

Picture Mr. Whitney in Mississippi circa 1911 and there is, yet again, another story about a black man who was lynched for holding hands with a white woman. His response to the said event, "Moral of the story: Don't be black."

When are people going to learn about Facebook, Twitter, etc that just because you believe something and can say it, should you say it? People are still so naive about how far your words carry on the internet. Doesn't seem like they will ever learn.

And in another similar instance today: quick at the time to protest through Twitter that "the tolerance police" are calling for her prompt removal notwithstanding her 1st Amendment rights [to share her views on her off hours on her own private FaceBook page]", tweeted Tony Perkins of Family Research Council (FRC) - A certified hate group by the SLPC). icon_rolleyes.gif

He also states "the investigation of a teacher who posted statements opposing "homosexual activism" on her personal FB page is instructive"....

It sure is - just another reported example of the evil and lunacy that still exists among those most influential on young people and students! (The identity and gender of the teacher involved was not actually divulged in the story, while the school district investigates the legitimacy and complaints, even though Tony refers to the teach as "she".)

As an alleged former Marine, he should know all about restrictions, prohibitions and consequences concerning public and private persons' behavior and statements that reflect poorly on one's system/employer and on the individual's public or professional image.

This is hardly a witch hunt by radical homofascist activists as Tony Perkins would have us believe.

so called liberals vehemently rejected the in loco parentis doctrine decades ago . . . teachers are now mere wage slaves and warehouse workers, not moral avatars or pillars of the community. . .

. . . a communication in the private realm conveyed on a teacher's own time and equipment is protected speech, unless you subscribe to the Erich Honecher School of Public Discourse . . . where is the Stasi when we need it?

. . . the OP's post is but another disengenuous screed from the anti-speech faction

Please lets not over look how you being a fare left fundamentalist, whom promoted for most of your life, that homosexuals were all dirty, and beneath you. Why do you fail to see you sins and the damage you spent most of you own life promoting; homosexuality was wrong. yet you focus all your hate on the right wing, over looking your own sins and thos of the left. Just because you are now a bisexual living the gay lifestyle, and not the straight one you spent most of you long life in, will make up for all the damage you yourself have done. How dose this make you any better than a conservative republican found in a public airport toilet; pray tell.

Being straight or living that lifestyle is not condemning homosexuality. its all about one's own comfort. Plus, the time and palce he grew up in made it harder.

Either way, he's doing what needs to be done now, and that's what matters, now.

My arguement when people make these statements is how would they feel if that was their family member or child ? I've used this many times to my parents when talkina about the death penalty. What if one of his students were to commit suicide becuase they were gay?? Would he feel any different if that happened?

What does gay student suicide have to do with the death penalty?

You'd give Madonna the death penalty, admit it.

    Some people just deserve it.

Good. Homophobes must be shamed and ridiculed.

    Intolerance is intolerable.
