Sad news today about a 15 year old boy who killed himself in Ottawa this week after tiring of being bullied for being gay. And Rick Mercer's rant.

I'm so glad you posted this! Erm ... here's an active link to his rant:

For those of you outside of Canada who don't know Rick Mercer
he's a Canadian Comic based in Halifax Nova Scotia. He's famous for his interview of George Bush http://youtu.be/8KwEDgpSWxo

Is it me, or is Mercer sexy when he's angry?

Shawnathan saidI thought it was good, but I thought it could have been great if he had mentioned that he is gay.

He is out - he doesn't have to repeat it every time.

I saw it on Tuesday and thought it was amazing, completely gets to-the-point of how the majority of people feel about this issue. People in power need to take note of Rick Mercer's advice, and act upon it.

IMO, Rick Mercer's rant was pretty
much an act of bullying in itself,
targeted at one gay MP in particular.

Something i always hated was how bullying is treated in schools. I mean, when you're in third grade its stupid and the kids should get punished but when you get older, especially in my experience, you're almost encouraged not to rely on the school to solve your problems. I got bullied so much at one school, instead of trying to fix the problem I WAS ASKED TO LEAVE!!! The school ACTUALLY ASKED ME TO MOVE TO ANOTHER SCHOOL!! This is an example of how much of a nightmare some schools were. I mean, a 17-yo in highschool beats up a kid and maybe gets suspended for a week. If that same 17-yo was not in school, worked at a gas station and beat up another kid on his way home one night and got caught, he'd be charged with assault or aggravated battery and most likely sent to prison. Somehow, high schools, which are supposed to prepare kids for life in the real world, do a damned good job of hiding them from reality.

    Amen.

It's like instead of helping the victim, schools help the perpetrator evade punishment.

I think kids who bully other kids and beat them for the most stupid things should be put down, or at least be treated for fucking some psychosis.

    John Baird.

Mercer has said that he doesn't believe in forcibly outing people, and to Baird's credit, he doesn't campaign against gay rights (like his closeted, homophobic, Republican cousins), and was one of the few Conservative MPs who didn't vote against marriage equality. Allegedly, his homosexuality is an open secret in Ottawa.

Ontario MPP Pamela Taylor once accidentally named him when pressed to name an openly gay Conservative MP or MPP, since it's hard to keep straight who's closeted, and who's just in a glass closet.

I didn't say that Mercer outed Baird, the other guy asked who he was obliquely referring to, and I think that it's Baird. Mercer has said that he would never do that, and I think that Baird doesn't deserve it. He's no Ted Haggard.

So you're blaming Mercer for Taylor outing Baird? It's only because you are assuming that Baird is gay/that Mercer is talking about him that you think Mercer has outed Baird.
    CGYSTEVE? Is this Harper?

I think you're misunderstanding what cgysteve was trying to say, I didn't get what you were thinking above from his comments at all -- simmer down a bit!

Let's have a little bit of order please!
