Are my shoulders bruised or are they just sensitive?

hey guys, i've always noticed every time i carry something heavy on my shoulders like in squats, stand calf raises or hack squats i get these strange red marks on my shoulders.. Im quite sure they aren't rashes or allergic reactions as it only happens when i do such workouts

are these bruises? if so how can i prevent them? i try using a towel to pad it but it helps very mildly and spread the redness more evenly and stays for about 2 days.. generally i don't care but sometimes i have shoots and it gets in the way etc

I get the exact same marks on my shoulders every Friday.. right after squats. Pads, towels, mantas... nothing seems to help. At least they go away. I have noticed that its worse when I'm supplementing with arginine. I'm thinking the increased vascularity may have something to do with it...

I like to think of them as battle marks... Yeah, weird.

I get those from squats. You can either add extra padding (like you're doing with the towel), but otherwise I don't know that there is anything you can do to prevent them.

EDIT: "battle marks" - I like that.

I get those too. Using the towel helps. Using a padded collar for the bar also helps. Technically, they are a form of bruise.

    Keep up the good work!

    Yup, I get those too.

Interestingly though, I also get those when I forget to properly equalize my drysuit when scuba-diving, and the wrinkles in my fleece get pressed into my skin, leaving all kinds of interesting wrinkle-bruise tracks..

This leads me to believe that if one were to wear a smooth elastic-style top that didn't wrinkle much when getting under the squat machine pads, it would probably help a lot.

    Good luck!

Just some broken capillaries due to excessive pressure from something heavy. Happens to most people after doing squats with weight. Dont worry. U will live.

I get these all the time, sometimes even from the standing calf press. Definitely with squats.

I get the same thing just from carrying a heavy laptop case on one shoulder for too long. It seems to be just broken blood vessels, like a bruise. Some extra padding so that the skin doesn't get pinched should do the trick.

They usually are much worse, this pic is was taken after it was padded with thick towels so its less intense, I get them mostly from Calf exercises but it also happens with anything with pads on my shoulders, during squats i tend to balance the bars more behind my neck and using my hands so it is less intense with barbells. it is a lot worse with hack squats which puts all the weight on shoulders using pads

They are called pressure abrasions. You can't really stop them, like you said the pad will just distribute the pressure points around and make them mild but larger.

You'd get them on your neck if I choked you icon_razz.gif

Try applying lotion with vitamin E and aloe after your workouts and it should help them heal faster.

Veins don't make 90 degree turns. Those are not from inside, they are from something touching you.

I get these, too. Most often they appear where the seam on my shirt creates an extra bit of pressure. Try doing squats, etc. while wearing a shirt without a seam on the top of the shoulder.

Or shirtless. And then post pics so we can discuss your success.
