Hey guys -- I'm visiting Auckland and Melbourne for two weeks in late Dec/early Jan and am looking for tips on things to do. I got the Lonely Planet travel guides which always tend to have good suggestions, but I like to ask people who've lived there or visited there before.

Any must-see sights? Must-do activities? Favorite spots? Little known hikes, beaches, restaurants, etc. that'll blow my mind? I'm staying in the city for both visits, so anything I can accomplish in a day trip is ideal.

Going to be in Auckland for NYE, so if anyone knows of any exciting New Year's events in the area, that'd be helpful too.

Really...? No one has any suggestions? Y'all were so helpful when I traveled to Barcelona... I was hoping I'd get some good ideas out of you for NZ and Australia, as well!

I believe during the 2nd week of January, there's a relatively big tennis tournament that goes on called the Heineken classic in Auckland?

If you're a fan of tennis in the slightest, probably cool to check it out?

I don't know if this is your cup of tea, but the tram system in Melbourne is a lot of fun to ride since it is THE largest tram system/network in the world. The city lanes in downtown are a lot of fun to walk around too and contain numerous places to shop, eat, and drink at. If you are into memorials and monumental architecture, check out the Shrine of Remembrance on St. Kilda Road; it took my breath away I must admit. Luna Park is also a really cool, old-fashioned amusement park. And lastly, for some GLBT fun, head to Commercial Road in South Yarra and Smith Street in Collingwood.

And, be sure to go to Eureka Tower for the observation deck and the glass cube that extends out from the building allowing you to look ALL the way down from almost 1,000 feet.

    Hope this helps.

Ah, it's a shame you won't be in Melbourne for NYE... I'd hazard that there'd be a hell of a lot more to do down there than there would be in Auckland!

Anywho... regarding suggestions for Melbourne: it's got a pretty vibrant live music scene, so I'd definitely suggest you check out some bands while you're there, if that's what you're into. Can't go past the food on Lygon St either! icon_biggrin.gif
