I bought ankle weights a long time ago, and I find that they have very little practical use. For one, you should never run with them strapped to your ankles. The extra weight just forces you to chop your stride and stomp on the ground. Bad for your joints. I think they're ok for walking, but they still affect your form/stride to some extent.

I only use them when I do leg raises, or flutter kicks, or pull-ups. But never use them for their intended/advertised purpose. If you want to make your runs more challenging, then I suggest holding them in your hands instead. Much safer. Or better yet, get a weighted vest instead.

That makes sense about not running with them but what about skating? I originally picked rollerskating over jogging because of the joint impact stress associated with the latter. Since you're casting your strides instead of lifting and dropping? I was thinking about weighted gloves too, since it's dangerous to skate holding anything and I'm curious what it might do since I use my arms a lot when I'm casting low

I use them as sandbags to hold my tripods steady in wind during a photo shoot.
