Going to California in a couple of weeks and was wondering if anyone has recommendations for good places to stay in areas around Laguna Beach, Santa Monica/WeHo/MarinaDelRey, Pismo Beach area, Carmel, and San Francisco?

Gay guesthouses/B&Bs are good, but any decent place would be appreciated.

Hey man... we were recently in the Santa Barbara/Ventura area and those are both really nice towns. We stayed at a Holiday Inn in Simi Valley which was cheap and certainly clean but there is not very much to do right there.

Neat places to visit in that vicinity are Ojai and Solvang (Danish-American town that looks straight out of a kid's storybook). It is about 1/2 an hour off the 1.

Another time we drove from San Jose down the coast... we stayed at a cool B&B (Inn at Depot Square or something like that ) in Capitola on the north shore of Monterey Bay.

Monterey and Pacific Grove are both cool towns to visit (scenic and there is some John Steinbeck-related stuff if you're a fan) and the drive down the PCH from there to St. Luis Obispo is breathtaking. Another cool place to see along the way is William Randolph Hearst's house at San Simeon.

In SLO we stayed at the Madonna in which is trashtastic. It was built in the 50's or 60's and every room has a different theme. The restaurant is like an acre of pink Naugahyde.

    Hope that helps.

I live near Pismo, so it depends on what you are looking for.

Madonna Inn is totally campy and fun.

If you want something more benign and closer to the beach, there are quite a few cheaper hotels in the Pismo area. If you like higher end, Dolphin Bay (new) is very nice. The Cliffs (right next door) is okay, but the bar attached to the hotel has nothing but a-holes for employees.

Feel free to email me if you want specific recommendations for the area.

    Happy travels!

I'll be heading up the coast in a few weeks, and I'll be staying at the former Hearst family hunting lodge near the Los Padres Forest. I'll let you know afterwards.

bacchus8 saidHey, thanks for the suggestions so far! Going in a couple of weeks and just finalizing plans. Unfortunately didn't realize that it was US Thanksgiving, so may be a bit quiet. LOL.

If you want cheap, low class trashy camp, nothing beats the Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay.

Laguna beach is not entirely so gay anymore. Wealthy moved in and gay guys moved to Laguna Niguel, Santa Margarita. But Laguna is still closest in feel to Hawaii during the summer. I would suggest stay close to the beach at all locations. Nothing stands out to me for your locations but expensive resorts or shabby inns.

Haven't been to it yet, but Treebones Resort is on my list of places to check out. They're perched on the coast near Big Sur and have a human-sized nest you can rent out in addition to some cool looking yurts. Treebonesresort.com I think (on my phone).
