Obama campaign will be highly negative because they don’t have much positive to run on.
Opposition campaign should have a negative component because running against an incumbent is, in part, negative.
Labeling is very powerful, and associations that define and strengthen labels should be exploited.
OWS presents an excellent opportunity to greatly expand the “socialist” label.
Most politicians on the left who embrace such policies do not have the courage, or political intelligence to call themselves socialist. Bernie Sanders is a counter-example, demonstrating honesty that others avoid.
Most on the right have been hesitant to use the socialist label, which is highly toxic.
It is not a great leap to properly describe the ringleaders of OWS as socialists. That label, together with similar images comparing their activities in the US with the riots in Greece strengthens both the use of the label and the association of dire results of socialist policies.
The Democrats embracing OWS also strengthen their association and make themselves more vulnerable to the label.
Grassroots folks should now more freely use the term, socialist, to describe the progressive Democratic policies. The description is honest, considering the term is commonly used to describe policies in Western Europe. Parties and politicians there label themselves as socialists.
Labeling individual politicians as socialist should be avoided in the near-term. It is too drastic. Instead, label their policies as consistent with socialist policies. Continue to emphasize the relationship between the Democrats and OWS, and with the situation in Greece.
In the longer term, the label should not be used to describe politicians such as Pelosi. It will be more effective if used only on Obama. After a few months describing Obama’s policies as socialistic, there will be a smaller leap to label Obama as a socialist and portray him as a socialist whose policies will drive us towards the misery being felt in Greece.
This policy should be distributed. No need to keep it secret, as the Obama supporters would see it anyway. The beautiful thing is the more they attack the policy, the more they, themselves, must use the term “socialist”. The more the term is used publicly, the more it will stick.
