What do you say to this person?

So I know this person who basically as long as I've known them seems to talk smack about their friends and well gets me to talk smack about the ones I sort of know or through them. But the thing is that as I talk to the said friends I realize they aren't as bad as that person made them seem. And I'm seeing that this person is basically trying to make rifts between his friends and keep them I guess away from one another well at least some. Is this really an issue with the person? Or is this something that is natural with every person? Any advice on what to do?

Maybe he's jealous of the friendship that the others have with each other. And he's trying to break things up. It's the old, "if I can't have that, then you can't either" type of thing. If this situation concerns you, then ask him what's up. See if you can find a counter argument to all the bad things he says about those friends. And see how he reacts. If you want to take things further, you can ask those other friends if this dude is talking smack about you too.

I know they talked bad about me on several occassions even though when I ask him he says he hasn't. ever
