It was a telling slip of the tongue. We need to start labeling the progressive left as advocating socialism. The second message here describes a strategy leading up to the election:

That's part of the "fundamental transformation of America" that's headed our way! icon_razz.gif

Wow, a video of Obama saying he wants to transform America.
    Powerful stuff.

OK Bill thinks some of you should put your tinfoil hats back on, because this seeing a weirdo commie whatever behind rhetorical bushes is getting well, weird.

If someone with socialistic attitudes invented the wheel, likely you'd all be walking everywhere.

The fact is, Both left and right come up with good ideas and bad ones. For Pete's sake, you're allowed to cherry pick the ones that work and use them, no matter what party comes up with them.

    D'oh.

Very true. There are inventions from the USSR that are still in use. http://nemworld.com/?p=1189
One of my favorites is the AK-47. It was based on a different philosophy than the M-16. Both have their good points.

But as for the thread theme, yes, the progressive Democrats advocate socialism. Not the classic socialism as described by Marx and Engels, but the flavor practiced by the Western European Socialist politicians and parties. They label themselves as socialists. This will be an important theme in the election, as we will properly use the term so that the electorate can decide what policies they want. The mistakes of McCain in 2008 being a goody two-shoes and hiding the truth for fear of being mean will not be repeated.

America has been a mixed economy - primarily capitalist with socialist policies to reign in its excesses and provide for the common good - since it's inception. That you don't recognize this is proof of your profound ignorance of the basics of American history, economy and politics. icon_rolleyes.gif

Like a sprinkling of seasonings, eh? A dash of capitalism here, a sprinkle of socialism, there. Let's not forget that many Democrats want complete government control of the health care system, a significant part of the economy. They want redistribution of income and redistribution of wealth using inheritance taxes to seize wealth from families. Let's not hide from the fact that many Democrats seek an economy modeled on the same economy as advocated by the West European Socialists. The Democratic Party has taken a turn towards socialism, and this will be a major issue.

The Democrat Party has been voting for Socialist ideas the last 3 years. Thank God we have the party of NO. Below is a list from section 2 of the Communist Manifesto. How many of these points have the Dems been promoting??

    1. Abolition of property in land and application of all rents of land to public purposes.
    2. A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.
    3. Abolition of all right of inheritance.
    4. Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels.
    5. Centralisation of credit in the hands of the State, by means of a national bank with State capital and an exclusive monopoly.
    6. Centralisation of the means of communication and transport in the hands of the State.
    7. Extension of factories and instruments of production owned by the State; the bringing into cultivation of waste-lands, and the improvement of the soil generally in accordance with a common plan.
    8. Equal liability of all to labour. Establishment of industrial armies, especially for agriculture.
    9. Combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries; gradual abolition of the distinction between town and country, by a more equitable distribution of the population over the country.
    10. Free education for all children in public schools. Abolition of children's factory labour in its present form and combination of education with industrial production

Actually, John, a majority of Americans want a public option or single payer health insurance. It's not about control of the health care system, it's about access to healthcare.

And a majority of Americans support steps to lessen income inequality, including the estate tax, higher taxation of the top 1%, and job creation.

    Wow, you're thick.

No one is calling for abolition of the right of inheritance, but for taxation thereof. And 15% is not progressive income tax.

Obama would like to take it to 39% for the top earners. I believe he would take it higher if he could. Thats robbery. He has a lot of Socialist programs he would like to get in place as we have seen in the last 3 years.

One of the things they have done is feeding propaganda to uneducated people. Make them stupid, so they will rely on the government for everything. Make them feel worthless. Just look at the Occupy protesters in lower Manhattan. They look like disgusting bums. They have tattoos everywhere, piercings, their pants down at their hips. They have no respect for people. Its gross.

On health care issues, you need to look at multiple questions:
49% Oppose Single-Payer Health Care System
54% Favor Repeal of Health Care Reform Law
62% Say Personal Responsibility for Health More Important Than Health Insurance
70% Favor Individual Choice Over Government Standards for Health Insurance
    http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/current_events/healthcare/october_2011/49_oppose_single_payer_health_care_system

Americans Divided on Taxing the Rich to Redistribute Wealth
    http://www.gallup.com/poll/147881/americans-divided-taxing-rich-redistribute-wealth.aspx

One thing I do believe, which can't be proven today, is many Democrats who advocate what some call moderate increases in taxes for the wealthy, would prefer much more substantial taxes if they thought they could get their way without paying the price politically. When I consider someone, I don't just consider the compromise results, but where I think they really stand. I believe the President and the controllers of the Democratic Party today would like to see an economic system in place that follows the socialist model of Western Europe. They only back off to the extent and when they have to. Just my opinion but it is based on much reading, listening to speeches, etc.
