After months of trying, I finally got my bf to join up at the new gym near us. Im so proud he did it as he is overweight and stuck in an office all day. I joined also after suffering from Glandular fever for the past 6 monthsicon_confused.gif so have put on a few kilos unfortunately.

Any tips for keeping him motivated?...Lol

Take a picture of him shirtless (or nude), use a photo editor to write "fatass" in big letters on it, have a 2'x3' poster printed and framed, and hang it on the wall where he'll see it every day.

pics from front, side and back every 3 months do wonders for motivating.

    No sucking in, no flexing.

It has to appeal to him. He can't be going to please you. Most people go because:

1.) They believe it is important
    2.) They think it's enjoyable/fun

I would allow him to pick the exercises that he's going to do. Let him wonder around the gym and see what's possible and find what appeals to him. He might want to walk, or join a class, or just goof off, or lift some weights, or play racquetball. He may or may not want "a plan".

Better yet, join Fitocracy together, and whoever has fewer points at the end of the week does the dishes for that week.

What kept ME motivated to attend a gym with a former BF were the other facilities there. We'd not only shower together in the gang shower (with an occasional quick BJ when nobody else was around), but sit naked together in the sauna, or in the whirlpool. Too bad the days of naked men's swimming pools had passed by the time we got together.

Not only did I find it a great treat to do public things with him in the nude (we went to nude beaches, too), but being seen naked, by him and other men, made me very conscious of maintaining my appearance. Clothes can be a disguise and an excuse not to stay in shape. Naked your build is fully revealed.

And while one could argue that naked appearance can be a negative incentive to return to the gym, fortunately he was in good shape and attended religiously (he still does). My attraction to him therefore extended to my tagging along with him to the gym, too, that included those lovely naked moments. icon_biggrin.gif

Whenever my bf and I come back from the gym, we usually have a lot of testosterone in our system. The moment the door closes we are all over each other. Works everytime. He didn't like going to the gym before that. Now he can watch me lift and reap the benefits right after.

Congrats for that, definitely an achievement. My partner made the decision it was time for him to lose some weight earlier this year and started going to the YMCA in his city. We have since worked out together a number of times (which was so odd in the beginning) and I am very pleased and proud of his progress (he has lost 20 pounds). I never would have thought he would have done this.

My recommendation to you is to emphasize how good he is looking and how good he could look, the health benefits, etc. If he sees it for himself, you will go a long way in seeing him there. Good luck and congrats!

You're brutal, Paul! Have you ever considered being a "boot camp trainer"? icon_lol.gif

Just a couple days ago my boss was bitching about some info he found proving his trainer/nutritionist wrong. I told him to hire a REAL trainer who'll whip his fat ass in shape...ME. icon_biggrin.gif

Since your BF is starting out... My regret is I didn't get hydrostatic body composition testing until I had lost 50lbs. It is frustrating not seeing the scale drop a pound at least once a week while hitting the weights AND cardio at the same time. "dunk testing" is really the best way to track weight loss.

There are quite a few "YouTube" videos that give you a preview of the process.

Also, a good diet is about half of the problem. But, remind him that he's feeling better/happier after a good cardio.

Congrats on you both joining a new gym. Just give him some good solid positive reinforcement. I just joined a new gym myself today and am looking forward to looking and feeling better every day.

Find an activity in the gym you can both be interested in.

Also as one of the fat guys, be encouraging, not competitive in the beginning. You are probably much further than he is. You don't want him to feel like he can't measure up to your level.

My bf says he will join the gym with me but whenever I bring it up he says later. Even the gym I go too I could get him in free for a few visits but he never goes with me.

I like going but some days I have no motivation to go but I always remember what I want to get out of it.

If he doesn't go with you, you keep going, and he will see how sexy you are getting and what he could of had if he would have kept at it.

Ask the boyfriend if he would be with you if you didn't work out.
