I read that a six-year male couple in NYC broke up after a female was introduced to the environment. Who the hell knows.

Yeah, it could be like a prison syndrome.

penguins find one mate male or female and stick together for life and sometimes even have babies even in the gay couplings.

Reading more, it appears that nesting couples shuffle around after every mating season. Not like some species of birds who mate for life. The two in the article I mentioned (which was in SF actually not NY) brooded an egg for another female together, but the next year one of them went with a female. Who knows? Six-year itch? Mid-life crisis? The other one will go out and buy a Miata and get highlights, and meet someone new LOL.

Wow, a nation that has gay marriage has hang ups over gay penguins?!?!?!?

I didn't know Canadians were so intolerant of 'the gay'.

For the breeding program.... Well I guess.

But isn't there artificial insemination they could use?

...and issue a press-release about it.

Methinks somebody is trying to stimulate ticket sales.

We had a pair in the San Francisco zoo that were partners for 6 years.
They also have been split up... by an amorous female penguin who aggressively pursued one of the males. The zoo decided to separate the males for a time since the ''love-triangle'' was disrupting the flow...

Yeah, this kind of penguin isn't like say... geese or swans. Separate those and they'll die of loneliness much of the time.

We had a pair of lesbian geese for years.

Lol, this is for a breeding program for an endangered species. It makes a lot sense. I find it silly that anyone would think 'it's just wrong'...

"Thou shalt not nest with a rooster as thou nesteth with a hen. It is an abomination."

It's in the Bible. Google it.

Well, I guess if his job is breeding than that should be expected of him when he is at work, but after he goes home at night he should be free to date whoever he wants.

Whosoever be that rooster which nesters with another rooster, verily, shalt that rooster be burnt with fire and garnished with sliced oranges and a wine which shall be the colour of blood ... only then shall the gayness of the rooster be removed from the Coop.

    Really, Metta8...?

This seems a bit silly compared to the gravitas of your other activist postings.

A breeding programme for penguins would necessitate optimised pairings of male and female birds.

I know at least a couple people that have written some excellent letters to the zoo. They feel that it is important.

"As a long time supporter of the zoo and an advocate for the enlightened and humane treatment of all the animals under its jurisdiction, I expect more sensitivity in matters like this to be shown by the organization."

One of them even offered to help finance bringing in another penguin to help with their breeding program.
