    What are your goals?

Lose a few pounds of fat, tighten up the muscles or do you want to be a 'tank' or whatever the name is for a guy with lots of muscle?

If your goals are small, say wanting to lose fat, tone up and shape up chances are you do not need to spend even a minute in a gym. Fitness is relatively 'easy' to attain by merely incorporating more exercise in our daily normal routine.

EXAMPLE: Many people go to the office to the store and battle it out over the nearest car parking spaces to the doors. If you just parked way out there were parking spaces are wide open and walk to the door, you have just added exercise to your routine, and will, eventually, tone up the leg muscles - a little.

Take a (one) flight of stairs say from ground level to the second floor, then ride the elevator to the floor you work on. You just exercised. Granted it doesn't have a huge impact, but you start mixing that with your parking further from the door while shopping, and walking up and down every aisle (yes even the woman's hygiene and diaper aisle) you are adding exercise in your daily routing, mostly adding a minute to two to regular routine stuff thus you are not going to notice the loss of time.

Even with my shattered knee (I walk on a cane more often than not) I park further from the store, take a (just one) flight of stairs, I also dance with the broom/vacuum, swaying to music as I clean over just pushing and pulling the tool. I add a little bit more movement, thus maintain a higher than average level of exercise in my day to day routine.

Diet is also crucial. Up the intake of fruit and veg to 6 servings a day. That means between breakfast and lunch have an apple. Between lunch and dinner, have a banana.

Replace one high sugar food with a low sugar one, instead of having french fried, have a baked potato using less butter and sour-cream.

Such a little thing can, over longer periods of time, have a huge impact on your overall fitness.

If abs is all you want, then focus on burning calories (aerobics) to burn off sub dermal fat, and do ab exercises. Since you are in a general fit shape you most likely do not need to join a gym. A 30 minute evening routine of leg lifts, crunches and the like will tighten abs nicely.

Abs are the only muscles that can be worked daily with ill effect. However a day off now and again is good for the body and soul.
