Broward County Passes Equal Benefits Ordinance

"Just moments ago the Broward County Commission voted unanimously to approve Florida's first countywide Equal Benefits Ordinance (EBO), a measure that requires the county's vendors to provide domestic partners with benefits equal to those offered to spouses of married employees. In other words, if you want to do business with Broward County, you must treat domestic partners and married employees equally."

Which the Florida State Legislature will quickly move to override. In fact, I doubt it's legal under current Florida law. But a nice gesture, even if your stated support of it is hollow, knowing that it won't last.

I'm not sure why this (very poor) picture was included with the article, since these aren't the County Commissioners who voted. I know most of these guys (our personal attorney on the far right), and I met them all either this past weekend, or the one before, at 2 different fundraisers.

Well, I suppose good PR to have it done. But nothing lasting will come of it, soon to be repealed/rescinded, and nullified by state law. icon_sad.gif
