I just got home from the university gym which I ride my bike to because being a poor college student, gas is out of my budget range. As I ride home (I ride on the road because there is no sidewalk) today as I make a left turn and signal as such, some jerk off gets right behind me and lays on his horn. I'm in the middle of the intersection at this point with no traffic approaching so I flip him off because he scared the shit out of me and what does he do?! He turns extra wide nearly running me over and almost sideswiping me! I'm even shaking as I right this!

I didn't do anything wrong! I could've done without the bird but honestly, why can't people drive safely?! I know better than most the consequences of road rage and aggressive driving but that's another story for another time.

Please, if you drive, drive defensively. Give pedestrians and cyclists the right of way. There's no excuse for not being careful.

Well your right, pedestrians and cyclists do have the right of way. Only occasionally as a driver do I get irritated about a couple of bikers riding side by side in the middle of the road, but I still react with tact.

You are right to be upset and I would have done the same thing, I'd have flipped him off as well. Too bad you didn't get his license plate number, the fu*)er!

Plus you have to remember that bikers are not suppose to be on the sidewalk. We are to use the road.

Most of the areas up here have bike lanes, but where they are not present, I just do my best to stay to the side of the road. But as stated above, bikers do have the right of way.

I understand your situation because I am a cyclist as well. I am familiar with road rage however, at the same token cyclists do not help their own cause by breaking traffic laws. Bicyclists need to realize that they have to follow the exact same traffic laws that motorists are required to follow. I see too many cyclists running red traffic lights, ignoring stop signs, riding against traffic, riding on sidewalks, and even hitting pedestrians in crosswalks. I am not condoning any road rage behavior but many cyclists need to help their cause by not doing as they damned well please and start obeying all traffic laws.

Exactly and I see alot of the same with motorcyclist. When I see this behavior I make sure to report it.

I never dealt with RR when Im out biking but have when I drive. The last incident ended with the other driver going into a ditch.

I dont drive defensive or offensive but somewhere in the middle.

The case I remember most was a guy driving 40 on the highway in the left lane. After 1/2 mile I couldnt take it and past him on the left(illegally but only option) flipping him off as I pass. Well 3 miles later he passes me cuts in front and slams on his breaks. long story short he totals his car, serves 15 years in jail, wife divorces him and I got to foreclose on his house.

Well, I was going to save this story but since we've dipped into the criminality of the issue I'll share my experience. My dad was murdered in an act of road rage. The guy who shot him to death was out of prison on early release (after his second conviction with a firearm). We don't know what transpired to cause such a senseless act of violence but it is understood that it was road rage. Luckily, he was caught and went to prison for life with no chance of parole.

Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is that everyone needs to drive smart and safe - lives depend on it. Not like old people (after all, driving to slow can be just as dangerous) - just intelligently. Reduce your distractions i.e. cell phones, loud music, food, etc. And just because someone else is being stupid doesn't give you the right. There really isn't any room on the road for ego so just observe the laws; it's really not that hard.

Lives are seriously at stake here. icon_exclaim.gif

I think the American custom of flipping off anyone who pisses them off is primarily what causes road rage. :S

Imagine a third world country like ours. We have bumper to bumper traffic on major cities, aggravated by the fact that there are a lot of public passenger vehicles - everything from Calesas (Horse-drawn carriages) to Pedicabs and Jeepneys. Lots of honking and shouting, but no one flips a bird. It's just not in the custom. Very minimal road rage here.

Giving someone the finger is probably the most insulting physical gesture you can give to someone, especially short-fused people like middle class Americans on the freeway. LOL I mean how many road rage incidents begin with someone giving someone else the 'fuck you' gesture? I remember another incident posted here on RJ...

Pedestrian Abuse! Sometimes people honk at pedestrians and cyclist for the sick thrill of watching them jump.
Maybe you incited the RAGE when you flipped him the bird, reaffirming your status to him as an actual human being and not his plaything.

I about got ran over running home from the gym the other day. Some asshat made a right turn at a stop light where right turns arn't allowed, and went right in front of me.

    Ugh.

Just watch out for stupid drivers... they're everywhere.

Waving the middle finger at somebody is considered road rage?

Agreed, what do you gain by telling him eff u?

The road is full of jerks and we all meet them, just go about your business and carry on.

I will say your extremely lucky he didn't get out the car and make this a more personal matter.

It's not the middle finger that's the problem, it's the getting out of the car to make it a more personal matter. I get the finger all the time, who doesn't? Oh man I'm in the wrong lane to turn, I've never been on this road before. Middle finger from some jackass in a Saab (not stereotyping). Actually stopping on red before making a right turn? Middle finger from boob behind me in an Escalade running late to his pedicure appointment. Ignore it. It takes two to create a road rage incident.
