Pain in my left lower trap during shoulder and chest workouts...

Whenever I work out my chest or shoulders I start to get a huge knot in my left trap...just on that side. It really gets in the way of how much I'm lifting and I don't want to do any permanent damage. Does anyone know what's maybe causing it or what I can do to make it better?
