hey, just wanted to know what happens when you block someone on RJ? Are you just blocking them from IM or are u actually preventing them from seeing your profile page aswell?

    thanks ;)

If you block someone on the forums, you can't see their posts, but you can see their text if someone else quotes them.

If you block a profile, you can't see it if they view your profile, you won't see any messages they send you, and they won't be able to chat you. That's all I can think of.

No, I don't think so. Trolli and I played around with it one night. I blocked him temporarily, but he didn't get any message about it.

I think that the third type of blocking might be in the chat room(s), but I never go in there.

Correct. I think "blocking" serves a purpose, but I haven't had to block more than 5 guys ever on this site and usually for a good reason.

Blocking does nothing to the other person. They do not receive a notice of the blocking. They just can't contact you and they will never know it because they can still send an email, you just don't receive it. They can still view your profile. When you do a forum block (ignore his posts), you just don't see their posts. They can still see yours and can still quote you. You just won't know it unless someone else quotes them. This is why I think it is funny when people announce in forum disputes who they have blocked since essentially you have blocked yourself, not the other way around. Why would they care if you 'blocked' them since you've really done almost nothing limit what they can do concerning you?

That's not true, because I've blocked many posters (racist posters, republican posters etc.) and I still see their profiles when they view me, so that doesn't work.

It would be great that if you blocked someone, they wouldn't be able to read your profile or your posts anymore.

When Trolli and I tried it, I couldn't see it when he viewed my profile. Maybe they changed it. Whatever.

Exactly. I think it funny when someone proudly announces they have blocked another. As if it is some kind of personal achievement or an insult that anyone cares about. It may be putting on rose colored glasses, but the blocked person can make disparaging comments, and the person who did the blocking will never know unless someone else quotes.

But why would you like to be reading insulting comments made about you, I'd much rather not know what a negative person says about me and block them, than read all that negative stuff.

Depends on the circumstances. Some negative people try to damage the reputation of others, sometimes repeatedly. Sometimes overtly, sometimes more subtly. You might want to just be unaware, but you might want to know if this is occurring - just depends.
