I'm sitting here sick with nothing to do other than create a forum. As a general rule I don't take a lot of medicine, pretty much only when really sick. I had a hangover two days ago and it's turned into a nasty stomach flu.

Since then, I've had all sorts of cures brought to my attention; exercise (more for hangovers), more drinking, dancing, greasy food, saltines, soup. Just to name a few.

So I was wondering what you do to cure hangovers and what you do to cure other illnesses. You get something extra if you can explain why. ie. You need to eat the greasiest thing possible because it will coat your stomach and protect you.

For nausea I learned always ginger... ginger has a chemical that works on the nervous system so that it basically kills the signals from the brain that give you the feeling of being nauseous...

for a headache I once heard ginger and lemon, so you could try both.. I dont know why though... i would just take a painkiller thats easy on the stomach, like acetaminophen (paracetamol/tylenol)

The best way to cure hangovers is to prepare yourself the night before. Prior to going to bed drink water, and eat something. (I don't think it necessarily have to be greasy). Stomach pains and headaches are usually due to dehydration.

Headaches from hangovers are caused by the product of alcohol metabolism: acetate and acetaldehyde. The best way to stop those headaches is to take painkillers like ibuprofen (not acetaminophen) and caffeine. Acetaldehyde can also cause oxidative free radical damage, so an antioxidant like vitamin C helps. Seriously, scientifically proven cure.

Hydration never hurts, but it's not a lack of water that causes the headache

Acetaminophen is the last thing you want to take unless you want to risk acute liver failure. Taking acetaminophen and alcohol will cause your liver to over produce transaminases, causing your liver to metabolize acetaminophen into toxic by-products faster than downstream enzymes can handle, possibly leading to hepatotoxicity. Not the best thing to do to your body.

I was at a house in Santa Barbara with a steamshower. It was the best thing I've ever had for a hangover. I had a major headache and upset stomach. I went in there for an hour, cooling off in the shower a few times and even fell asleep for 20 minutes. When I was finished my headache was gone and I was super hungry.

Hangovers are best "cured" by prevention. Less alcohol is "more".

Lots of water, and rest time are the only other ways I know to recover from a hangover.

Let me start by saying I like to drink. I used to go to one of the top party schools in the country, I joined a frat, and found out that my chapter was known as the "party" chapter and quickly became the party boy of my chapter, I am known for drinking a lot and for getting anyone sick who tries to drink with me drink for drink. With that reputation I will say I have only ever had 3 hangovers in my life, my trick is that after every drink, I drink water, it must be equivalent to half of the liquid amount I just had. If I am doing shots, I do 2 shots and then 1 shot of water. I just had a friend in town, and I was not able to drink with her at the party we hosted, because I am sick, but she followed my rule and for the first time in our many years of drinking she did not have a hangover the next day....try it, it really works...
