I thought I could hold out a little longer, but my Apple lust got the better of me. Got the urge this afternoon, and so went over to the Apple Store, bought a white 4S 64GB. Put a black bumper on it, looks très élégant. I had to get white because my partner will be getting my black 4, which otherwise looks identical.

Still exploring its features. Too late today to switch my partner's 3GS to my previous 4, you have to copy over the SIM cards but they're different sizes, an operation only AT&T can do in their store. We leave for Key West tomorrow, so I'll have it done down there.

My first impression is that both 3G and Wi-Fi signal strengths are greater, but I seem to have lost the digital battery strength indicator, just a simple bar now. Tried Siri, and it dialed our residential phone as I told it. I gotta learn more about it's capabilities.

Any thoughts from 4S users here?

socalfitness saidIf you do a search for iPhone 4S, you will find 22 threads on the topic.

Some of which I've contributed to, if you had bothered to read them. But this is a moving train, with regular updates, and now that I've jumped onboard I was inviting the latest comments.

For instance, I haven't noticed any screen discoloration, reported with some 4S phones. And there may be new issues since those other threads were started.

Also an interesting experience with the Apple Store today. I had phoned ahead to ensure that a white 64GB was in stock. It was a sudden whim to buy one before my Key West trip the next day, and so I wasn't going to wait for home delivery, like I did for my iPhone 4. I got there under 30 minutes, and was told they didn't have any. I asked to see the store manager, to express my displeasure.

He did the expected dance about high demand, yada, yada. But then he did a check that the regular sales people couldn't. And he found a phone reserved some days ago, and so out of inventory, but which exceeded their hold policy. That's the one I got today.

Sometimes it does pay to ask to see a manager. Not necessarily to rant & rave, but rather to explore all one's options, at least at the Apple Store. icon_biggrin.gif

not 100% sure but you can actually cut the sim(3gs) and make it a mini sim(for the 4), check out youtube for it. might be worth the hassle.

Thanks, good to hear. My 3rd iPhone, so obviously impressed so far. I especially like the integration of iPhones with my iMacs and MacBook, which I already owned.

I have had my iPhone 4S since launch day. I went to the Apple store after work and got it just like that (didn't have to line up or anything like the people in the morning). I was very fortunate.

I went from iPhone 3GS to 4S so I'm just loving that high resolution screen. I don't have to zoom in to read most web pages anymore. I also like the fact that the iPhone 4S renders web pages instantly whereas on the 3GS there was some delay when you scroll on certain web pages. The HSPA+ faster connection is also noticeable. Streaming music through wifi or HSPA+ doesn't seem to make the phone as hot as compared to my 3GS (though that was not a major issue anyway). Another thing that I found useful is processing of songs from the iTunes store is so much faster on 4S than 3GS thanks to that dual core.

I haven't had a chance to play around with video recording and photo taking too much with it yet. I'll experiment with it during the holidays when I see my family.

The only bad thing is that the battery does go down fairly quick. I haven't experienced major battery drains like some of the forum posts I've read though but I am hoping they'll resolve these issues as time goes on.

I use Siri mostly to set reminders. In Canada, she's not integrated with maps so I'm losing some functionality there.

But overall I'm quite happy with it.

Yeah, I'm noticing a speed increase, too. As soon as I synced it to my home iMac it did a software upgrade to iOS 5.0.1, which I understand helps resolve battery usage issues by minimizing certain functions.

I did some test video recording (why a got the 64GB) and it seems excellent, and the still pics are quite good, too, at 8MP. Not as good as my 14MP camera with a Leica zoom lens, obviously, but for handy snapshots using an all-in-one pocket device it's quite acceptable.

BTW, I found where the battery percentage switch is (Settings>General>Usage>Battery Percentage). I'm sure I had set the same switch on my 4, but the sort of thing you do once at the beginning and never think about again.

LOL! Well the reason he gets my hand-me-down phones is the same reason my late Father always got my Mother's used cars, while she got the new: he wrecks every phone he gets! The worst incident was sending one through the washing machine, but he just beats them up in regular use, too, just like my Father could make a car look 10 years old in under 1, all worn, scratched & dented.

So sorry, you can't have the 3GS, either, that's going into reserve as a quick emergency replacement should he drown the 4 (he also loses phones). icon_rolleyes.gif

Umm, having enough to buy a new phone isn't really "too much." At least by my definition. icon_wink.gif

Well my partner is very happy with his iPhone 4 (my previous phone), and my new 4S is also excellent.

I got him an Otter Box phone cover, because he's so rough on his phones. By coincidence, we had met some friends at a bar last Sunday, and I was showing them my new 4S that I had bought that same day from the Apple Store.

And a friend mentioned he had an Otter Box, which I knew nothing about. He suddenly flung his iPhone down onto the tile floor! I was shocked! I mean, deliberately throw your cell phone down onto a hard floor?

He said his Otter Box cover was that good against impacts. Well, I guess so. And afterwards I got my partner his Otter Box. And I was so impressed I got one for myself a day later, too.

The Otter Box reveals enough of my white 4S that we won't get it confused with my partner's all-black 4. And so we have these identical phones and covers, except for my white trim versus his black, and I'm kinda happy. A silly thing, I admit, but I like us being twins. icon_biggrin.gif

No, we're actually rather poor. But we budget our money, so we can have the best toys. A bit of financial discipline is the secret.

We buy nothing on credit, everything cash. If we can't buy it cash, we don't buy it. Our only real expense is insurance on our car and condo, which in Florida, is sky-high for both the car and the condo due to dreadful drivers and hurricanes. Other than that, we have no expenses.

So that we do get to have a few toys like iPhones and iMacs, but that's nothing. We seniors do know how to stretch a buck. icon_biggrin.gif

OK, update: just finishing our stay in Key West, following the bike ride down here mentioned in another thread. And my partner loves his iPhone 4, with his Otter Box cover. All his data from the previous 3GS transferred over without a glitch, and the iOS works the same way for the things he commonly does, all of which keeps him solidly in his comfort zone. My dear partner is all about comfort zone, and I'll move Heaven & Earth to make that happen.

My own 4S is a marvel, also with a matching Otter Box cover, though I haven't had the time to explore all its new iOS features, like Siri. Perhaps I'll be able to do that during this extended US Thanksgiving weekend when we return home.

We've been so damn busy here, with the Ride, having lunches & dinners in KW with friends every day, meeting RJ members, doing a cruise, etc, etc. We've decided to return to KW in December, will make the reservations later this morning before we depart, we have so much unfinished business here.

We just fucking love this place! We met a straight couple from Germany in a bar yesterday (Mon), a chance for me to utilize my dreadful German. And they live in Berlin, where I did for 2 years! We had such fun swapping stories. Plus I also explained what a Florida Sunpass is, which the car rental in Fort Lauderdale pressured them into getting, and I assured them it was a good choice, that they hadn't been ripped off since they drove the Turnpike down to KW.

"Alles ist in ordung, mein herr." Germans love to hear that. LOL!

I wanted the new iPhones before our 9-day trip, getting the 4S the day before we departed, and the Otter Box covers bought on the road (using the Yelp iPhone app to find them). Never doubt we senior citizens can't use technology. LOL!

So that I can endorse the new iPhone 4S. All in all, a lovely trip for us. icon_biggrin.gif

Too bad. I hear AT&T will be starting a Black Friday deal and offering many phones for 1 cent. I'd recommend the new Windows Phone. Having the live tiles blows away the other antiquated phones that still use rows of static icons.

I doubt any AT&T iPhone will go for a US penny, certainly not my white 64GB 4S. And knowing Microsoft, I wouldn't go near their Windows phone, until it establishes itself in the market. I knew what I wanted, and I got it. I rarely do regrets. icon_biggrin.gif
