Some men still know how to use their upper brains. Those are the ones smart enough to live their lives with other men instead of being with some girl who thinks her one brain is smarter than a guy's two brains.

    Ya ... women are smarter

Women tend to do better in school over all though... all the people you mentioned up here were mostly in times when women were expected to stay home and raise families and often did not have access to higher education or were not allowed to discuss scientific matter with men... the exception was Madam Curie, who was able to do her work because she had a husband who supported her in the first place (Its even the name of the French university: "Pierre et Marie Curie")

The reason men often will not allow equality with women is simply due to the male ego, which is an evolutionary protective factor in a hierarchy between males...

Both Men and Women are equally smart. Schools don't make statistics. More girls are going to school maybe, but that's also cause there are more females out there than males. Females may go to school but more men own businesses or take on ventures.

Men are more hands on, while women are more verbal in what they do hence school with books and writing is perfect for women.

Success can't be determined by education, the wealthiest people, most of them never got passed an AA.

If more girls are enrolled in school than of course a school would say, women are smarter.

Measure of brain smarts does not determine success. And most people take in the account of one's success and impact on society.

I think the question is kind of dumb, but there are a couple of things to consider:

Those of you who list famous male inventors/scientists as some sort of de facto proof that men are smarter forget that up until fairly recently in human history, women were excluded from any education that went beyond learning basic household skills (it's still pretty much the norm in places like Afghanistan). So, naturally, history is severely lopsided toward men in the categories of inventions, scientific achievements and political leadership.

Given that many universities (even public ones) restricted female enrollment as late as the 1970s, it's pretty remarkable that women now represent more than 50% of the overall enrollment at the undergraduate level, and are also now more than 50% of the enrollment in PhD programs, medical colleges and law schools nationwide. Also, women tend to get better grades and score higher on standardized tests.

Are women smarter than men? I think it's pointless to try to answer that. But had there been a more level playing field over the past several thousand years, I imagine we wouldn't have to pose such stupid questions.

There was a piece by a psychology professor from Florida State University entitled "Is There Anything Good About Men?". He touches upon this subject a bit...

    http://www.psy.fsu.edu/~baumeistertice/goodaboutmen.htm

People can point to plenty of data that the average IQ of adult men is about the same as the average for women. So to suggest that men are smarter than women is wrong. No wonder some women were offended.

But that’s not what he said. He said there were more men at the top levels of ability. That could still be true despite the average being the same — if there are also more men at the bottom of the distribution, more really stupid men than women... the data are there, indeed abundant, and they are indisputable. There are more males than females with really low IQs. Indeed, the pattern with mental retardation is the same as with genius, namely that as you go from mild to medium to extreme, the preponderance of males gets bigger.

    ...

For now, the point is that it explains how we can have opposite stereotypes. Men go to extremes more than women. Stereotypes are sustained by confirmation bias. Want to think men are better than women? Then look at the top, the heroes, the inventors, the philanthropists, and so on. Want to think women are better than men? Then look at the bottom, the criminals, the junkies, the losers.

In an important sense, men really are better AND worse than women.

"restricted female enrollment as late as the 1970s," that's crap, I was living back then, you forget how may female lawyers and politicians we have that grew up in the 60's.

I don't think it is in the nature of most women to be as much of risk taker and adventurers as men, they are more nurturers, this is why there is a lopsided achievement factor between men and women, not because either is smarter."

Um, I teach at a top-tier public that did not allow women to enroll as undergraduates until the 1970s, and there were many others that had restrictions up until about that time as well. Most opportunities for women at US colleges really began to expand around then.

Also, you claim that it is because they are nurturers that they haven't achieved. Though that nurturing quality *may* mean that they aren't risk takers, I still stick by the fact that women haven't had the same educational or employment opportunities as men for 99% of recorded human history that they can't boast a comparable list of accomplishments.

I was living back then too, and while we may have some visible lawyers and politicians that grew up in the '60s, compare them to the numbers of their male counterparts and I think you'll get the point. Things have gotten a whole lot better in that regard.

Probably. I know some women who feel better about themselves when they talk shit about men as well. Immature ego stroking by bringing down others is a universally human trait.

You could ask that same question of women, because they are contantly putting down men but yet it is not considered sexist.

I think there is a lot of hype that women are being kept down -so-to-speak- by men (at least in the US, this certainly is not the same for other countries where yes they are oppressed), but the fact is that women have the same advantages as men in this country and have for quite a while. So ya maybe they still are on the short list, but they have definitely been in position of power for long enough now where they cannot use such claims any more and should be already proving that they are just as accomplishable as men ... wasn't it Loraina Helmsley, or something like that, I think that was one such women?

I'm sorry but I consider myself a feminist (yes, men can be feminists too, feminism= men and women are equal) and if you think that women are not discriminated against anymore, you are wrong, men still earn more than women for the same job, just an FYI.

You touched on one of the more essential things, education. how are kids being tought? Girls generally do much better than boys in the frames of a (old fashion) school system w. conventional class room teaching ("sit down and be quiet "). so actually today a lot of boys are left behind because they aren't tought in an optimal way.

funny enough though in adult life, men are still dominant in high positions. But my guess is that this has more to do with men being more ambitious and competitive (in general), whereas women might settle if they're happy enough.

Your arguements would be a lot more believable if there was some sort of statistical proof and I am pretty sure that you will actually find that gay men, and hispanics in general are discriminated against more than women in general.

Google it if you want proof, I'm feeling lazy, as for the second part of your reply, I never say they weren't, and btw most of the time, when women put down men, they put down straight men, so there's no reason for you to get that offended.

but the fact is that women have the same advantages as men in this country and have for quite a while.

Though women have made great strides in the past 30 years or so (see my point about how women now comprise the majority on college campuses), it's a gross overstatement to say that they have the same advantages as men. In theory, maybe, but in practice it is not the case. There certainly is no constitutional amendment that grants women equality (it was voted down in the 1970s).

Since when does a generation constitute "quite a while"?

Women constitute slightly more than 50% of the population, but until they also populate 50% of the board rooms and seats in Congress, men shouldn't be worried about women taking over.

also, to add to the debate.. I have been told in med school, that if yo are a female, you re more likely to be accepted to positions.. women apparently simply do better in health care... they re more resilient to stress it seems... men break down easy, die early etc etc

Finally, I think we had all better team up with women, because as long as the underlying current is that women are inferior to men, gay men are inferior to straight men ;) wich they are NOT, but society surely thinks so

Then basically what you are actually stating, is that since they have started allowing women to be educated along side with men, the men's dumb rate has gone up.

So they have been no in the educational system for several generations, who has provided a major world changing invention (that they did not build on from others inventions) Iet's see, I know of the windshield wiper and dishwasher, but no sure of any that have drastically changed people lives. Alexander Fleming came up with penicillin, maybe some chemo drug or something? Just saying ....
