Maybe you heard it but if not, spread the word. The Salvation Army is a right-wing conservative (extremist) religious organization and highly active politically. They are particularly aggressively in supporting anti-gay laws, fighting anti-discriminatory laws proposed to protect and grant equality to gays. They even fight against laws that promote equality and protection for gays which have passed and are in the books, to try to knock them down. They also reject gay couples from shelters that the SA offers to others. You can read more on the internet, and it is very sick. Their homophobic policies are in their public statements on their goals and purpose.

I encourage people not to give a penny to the Salvation Army, not to donate clothes and items to them, not donate your time as a bell ringer or other services to them. There are many, many other charities and organizations, who unlike the SA, provide shelter, food, and help to ALL human beings who need it - and are not contributing to our oppression.

Please spread the word. Our small efforts do count. Thanks.

I shoed them away from my door ten years ago for their stance on gay marriage in Canada. We won.

I stopped giving to the SA years ago. My charities are my alma mater, the gay and lesbian community center here and Pride.

I have never given to the SA, nor will I ever give to the SA. I do not support or condone fundamentalist hate groups.

I'm surprised our conservative friends here (you know them as Republicans--the OTHER fundamentalist hate group) have not weighed in supporting the SA.

I'm sure one will be along to promote their agenda soon and support those who will only provide for those in their niche....

So, does this mean their thrift stores are antigay too?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Salvation_Army
"...Following the firestorm in the summer of 2001, the Salvation Army approved a plan in October 2001 to start offering domestic-partnership benefits to gay employees.[39] The organization, acknowledging "a clear difference in how we deal with homosexuality as an employer and as a church in ministering to our followers," affirmed its historical objection to gay marriage while a spokesperson nonetheless observed that shifts outside the church had created "a new awareness of our world."[39] Members of various evangelical Christian interest groups were quick to protest the decision. Focus on the Family founder James Dobson excoriated the Salvation Army for abandoning its "moral integrity" and urged his radio listeners to bombard the organization's offices with phone calls and letters.[39] The American Family Association also accused the Salvation Army of a "monstrous ... appeasement of sin" that resulted in a "betrayal of the church."[39] By November 2001 the Salvation Army rescinded its decision from the month before with an announcement that it would only provide benefits coverage for different-sex spouses and dependent children of its employees"

I have been avoiding the Salvation Army, but today on Facebook I saw a post from a gay friend of mine who credits them for saving his life while he was in the throes of addiction, indigent, and needing to start over. Apparently -- at least for the people he was dealing with -- his orientation was known and not an issue.

I agree that while there is any question you can find another group that may be doing the same work and outwardly evokes equality without being forced into it (as some faith-based employers have been).

My money goes to my own denomination's charitable outreach, which is subject to the same equality commitments the rest of the organization has made.

I had heard they were ultra-conservative, but I was not sure how they related to gays. A shirt-tail relative of mine got some help (he was straight) from them, so I started sending them money, but I quit when I did get word a few years ago that they were anti-gay.

Wow. Sad that they actually tried to do something good, and the douchebags at AFA and FotF basically made them undo it. Either way, I can't give up shopping at their thrift stores, they are the best... icon_redface.gif

I do usually avoid their thrift stores though...I'm petrified of picking up something and finding out that it is infested with bedbugs or scabies or something like that!

I had no idea - thank you for enlightening me (us). I just read their Position Statement on Homosexuality - very carefully, especially the last part. I'm not donating funds to pharisaical organizations. There are plenty of other places needing our support.

I don't know about that, I've been a wanderer at times in my life, around the entire world as a matter of fact, and there is good and bad in all. In fact the worst experience I had was a GLBT sponsored facility in L.A. It's true some

Sally Ann's can be challenging but then you walk out, get what you need, and leave what you don't. If you're in a small town and the only place there is, is a Sally Ann, and they don't have the resources because you've boycotted them, who have you hurt ?

One Sally Ann in Medicine Hat AB- tried to separate I and my husband, and I read them the riot act and left - but when we left there were 15 guys and gals there who needed to be there, so unless you're going to open up a shelter ?

Later on a social worker told me that I have to play the game to get what I wanted sometimes, and I said to her like I say to anyone, if you want to play you do, if you do not want to play you do not.
