Going to Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand in Jan 2012 - Any tips?

  • Nov 21, 2011 6:40 PM GMT
    Hey guys!

Off to Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand in Jan. I do intend to go to Angkor Wat and the Mekong Delta but besides that, I am an open book.

Ive been to Bangkok before so no need to recommend Soi 4 to me, I know it well ;-)

    Any ideas though?

When are you in Siam Reap? I'll be there from Jan 6-9. We can perhaps meet up and explore temples together.

Oh and what about Soi 2 then? :-P

Dammit, I am there a week later! :-)

Will you be about anywhere in the 14 - 29 period?

Soi 2, soi 4, all the same ;-)

Jan is the perfect time for the flowers to bloom in Da Lat of Vietnam. However if you enjoy the beach i would recommend Nha Trang or Da Nang. Mekong Delta has some pretty good fruits tho'

Ah yep, the floating markets are the interesting ones to see. I live in Ho Chi Minh, normally i would offer to show people around but has been so busy with work and thesis. Hope you will enjoy your stay.

You're gonna have an amazing time!

How long are you going for? If you're touring SE Asia, you shouldn't skip Laos. That's my number one tip for you.

As for other tips... Cambodia is only worth seeing for Angkor Wat. You definitely have to view the temple at sunrise. It's beautiful and you can see the reflection of the ruins in the pond. Also, I found that there were more beggars in Cambodia and they are really aggressive. The merchants are really aggressive as well. And there is a lot of corruption in Cambodia as well, so beware. I flew in to Cambodia, but a couple of people that I met took the bus into Cambodia and they had to pay an extra "fee" at the border to get in. It's not too common but it does happen. And lastly, in Siem Reap if someone offers to take you to see the floating market, DO NOT GO!!! It's nothing like other floating markets and definitely underwhelming. And it's $15 US which is a fortune in Cambodia and not worth it.

I know I am writing a lot of bad things about Cambodia, but it's not as bad as I am making it seem. You're gonna have a good time regardless.

As for Thailand, my favourite places are:
    Chiang Mai
Beautiful city in the north. Great trekking, has a tiger temple, an amazing elephant show

    Railay
Awesome beaches, viewpoints, and rock climbing

    Koh Phi Phi
Great cafes, beaches, you can go to see Maya beach where the movie the Beach was filmed, and awesome viewpoints.

    Khao Sok
Beautiful. If you go, go stay at Smileys. Great hospitality there. There is a lake trip that you can go on to explore caves, trek and you sleep in a cabin floating on a lake.

If you have any Qs, I'd be more than happy to answer!

I'll be in Bangkok by that time.

Check out Vertigo Skybar at the rooftop of Banyan Tree Hotel if you haven't yet.

Avoid the street foods in all these countries, especially Vietnam. You will get food poisoning if you dare eat the street people's food.

I lived in Thailand for five months and greatly enjoyed my time. I volunteered as an English teacher.

I just got back from 18 days in Thailand most of which was spent on Koh Tao getting dive certified... 10 days there in a hilltop bungalow and the four day divign classes set me back $365 US.
And I disagree with anyone that says to not eat the street food, it is for the most part AMAZING! just be smart and avoid the stalls that look too gross.

Amazing trip man... I really loved Vietnam. Get a tailor made suit in Hoi Ann and make sure to do a cruise of Halong Bay.

In Bangkok, check out DJ Station, pretty decent club. Loads of flight attendants regular there
