Sorry to be a Debbie downer, but gay marriage not gonna happen. When I was 18, I was sure it would happen by the time I'm 30. But with 5 years to go, chances are looking very slim.
Support amongst the public grows year on year, and a clear majority (> 60%) now support either gay marriage or civil unions. But the political will to implement either from the two major parties is non-existent. This is especially true now with a hung parliament. The government does not want to spend the precious little political capital it has on a non-core issue that will certainly disrupt the current fine political balance.
From a broader perspective, neither major party is willing to stand firmly behind gay marriage. On the left the trade union legacy still weighs heavily on Labor, and on the right the Liberal/Nationals rely heavily on the gray and especially the country vote. And with the political pendulum so finely balanced and tending conservative for the foreseeable future, no party wants to alienate the sizable minority that oppose gay unions.
Still, it's not quite that bleak. Gay couples have been given many of the rights of marriage, even on things such as immigration which American gay marriages don't get. It seems Labor is okay with hush-hush on the down low appeasement, but doesn't want to say the words gay marriage, or even civil union.
Btw, I noticed this video has been posted at least 7 times now, and still counting. Hopefully, it can make something of an impact on mainstream Australia too.
