This was our dinner table discussion at Thanksgiving. I cited John 3:16 of course and I Samuel Chapter 18. Oh also the gay guy is a not a sodomite.

Neither because heaven isn't real, and if it were, only the Mormons and Westboro people would be accepted.

The Jews are always closer to a real version of heaven because they don't use the Bible (or any text, for that matter) as a argumentative, rhetorical, or life/death-based crutch.

This seems like a fucked up discussion at a dinner table...especially Thanksgiving. *sigh* this is why I avoid religion entirely. Too structured and the idea of following a giant book that has been translated into hundreds of languages is stupid to me. I respect people's religion but not when they attempt to force it into other people's lives and/or follow the religion completely.

Well, since there is no heaven, we'll call it a tie.

It's quite fascinating to research how Christianity and Judaism diverged over time despite being one in the same millenia ago. Hell, just look at how the Christian sects have diverged alone!

Right. Tradition is more about the dead rising upon the arrival of the Messiah.
Overall one can say that Judaism is more concerned with this life than the "next" one.

If there is only one God, there should be only one religion. I mean why would he reveal so many religions to people when he knows this will only devide and confuse them.
Let's face it god has nothing to do with that, each nation of our insistors has created her own religion to solve the question of "where do we go after we die?" among other things.
No one has an objective answer of this question, Some stuff are just not meant to be understood.

Traditionally, Jewish emphasis is more upon both what can be known and what is practical, rather than upon speculation of what can barely be imagined or more likely just referenced: a comment in passing. This is similar to Buddhism whereby even Nirvana is but a waypoint, not a destination whereupon once everyone has gotten off the wheel, consciousness continues to develop in a way that we can not even begin to imagine while we evolve up to that point.

Like people, religions appear more honest when they can accept and dare to acknowledge the things they do not because they can not know.

The audacity of religion to presume man can know the mind of God is their fatal flaw because the omnipresent does not fit in this moment. And so stupid people throw into your face what is already too big to see.

To the OP: the Bible is clear that the Jews are the chosen people and that in the Book of Revelation they are actually given a "second" chance. Personally, I think that people of all faiths in God are loved by him and he will give them a chance to figure out how to worship him in heaven, but that is just my belief and not supported by anything other than my own view of God's nature. I dont think God wants any human on earth to be apart from him.

To everyone else: I have to admit, one frustrating thing I find is the hypocrasy of the anti-religion guys on Realjock. I know that many are angry with Christianity, but rejecting Chrisitanity does give one the right to be equally as unaccepting of gay men/women who are Christian.

If a Christian attacked the belief system of another with the same mocking and hatred that some of you guys use you would flame them into oblivion. It isn't fair. It isn't respectful of each other.

Here is the bottom line: as a Christian, I have NEVER told anyone on Realjock they had to believe what I believe... in fact, I have never told ANYONE they had to accept my beliefs. But why should I stand by and let you guys make fun of me and insult me because of those beliefs?

You guys need to look at your double standard. If someone steps out of line and tries to force his beliefs on you or make fun of you or is mean to you because of your beliefs, then you have every right to flame him. But without that happening, what gives anti-Christians the right to judge us? And that is EXACTLY what you are doing.

Hypocrasy goes both ways. And it is equally as unacceptable both ways.

How about Gay Jew vs. Straight Christian (i.e. Harvey Milk vs. Jerry Falwell)???

I'll put my money on the Gay Jew.

Seriously, who would you rather spend eternity with? But even more seriously, its just as likely that "god" will only let atheists into heaven...as "he" has no respect for anybody who buys into something based on zero facts. (i.e God created the 100,000 religions to identify the foolish people.)

Heheh, I would have politely observed that it's really none of our business, but solely god's.
