Taking inspiration from muttskins, I thought I'd make my 1974th posting a special one as it is the year of my birth.

Arriving in Dubai back in May 2001 got me so excited and in disbelief of how gorgeous the Arab men were! Of course the only image I have were probably the same as people living outside the Middle East: either that image of Osama Bin Laden or Saddam Hussain!

Perhaps it was the fact that I was a fresh meat on the block, coupled by a frame of mind that "You've never been fucked until you've been fucked by an Arab man." So sex was so easy then and I just let myself go by being careless being barebacked left, right and center thinking these guys ought to be HIV neg and disease free, otherwise they would've been deported already.

One day I woke up with a bad migrane. So bad I had to seek for treatment up to a point I'd beg for Voltaren injections! As it only masked the symptoms as a quick fix, it only got worse. I developed rashes and was feverish at night. I also had chills that would only be relieved if I gave in to doing some convulsions.

My blood tests were okay, surprisingly. About a couple of weeks I saw some lumps on my sac, like they were clusters of antbites. I was flushed! Although it did not feel itchy or anything, I was thinking, "Shit, this is it!"

So I went to see my 'family doctor' and suggested that I undergo VDRL screening and then TPHA if the former is reactive. And it was and I was indeed positive for syphilis. He immediately administered two shots of Penicillin. BOY, DID IT HURT!!!

As I was in pain face down the pillow I was laughing in spite of it all. The doctor was baffled and remarked how I was enjoying the whole procedure! But in my head I was laughing at the fact that there were, not just one, but TWO things in common with the way I contracted syphilis and the way I was being treated for it:
    1. My position in bed; and
    2. Pain in the ass!!!

Oh life! Mentally I was prepared that might have contracted the HIV virus. Thinking, if it turns out I'm positive, then at least, there is something positive in my life. I went to a private clinic where the HIV test was done (and don't report to the health ministry if found positive-- to give you ample time for your next course of action, unreported). Thankfully up to this day, I am still HIV negative.

For your information, when you are found out to be positive, when you go back to the clinic for your results, they will already detain you in the clinic until the police arrives and move you to a public hospital prison cell. Yes, all hospitals here have a police station within the same compound that has a detention cell for these cases: be it for HIV or hepatitis and other communicable diseases present in the bloodstream.

You stay in the detention cell until your visa gets cancelled and you are taken straight to the airport. It's difficult and horrific for those who come here without any friends or at least a relative as if that were the case, you don't even get to pack your things to take with you back home.

Yet Dubai markets itself globally as "The City That Cares."

    My arse.

Oh my gaylord... I was told that a million times already. I started in new year 2007 but never flourished. I was/am afraid of its success!!! All revealed through the eyes of an expat gay man.

Zim, thanks for sharing your story. That sounds like a completely horrendous experience. I'm glad you found out what was going on and that you're healthy now. I think this counts as a public health mitzvah (that is, a good deed--for those of you who skipped Hebrew).
