We're all adults shouldn't we be talking about something a little more refined / analytical ?

say for instance? - the holidays are coming up and im planning on turning my spending into charity donations? i dont have much to brag about my life but currently i am on 1,000 mac book- i think its safe to say a donation that a charity needs is a step in the right direction ! You guys have any charities you like to donate towards/participate in?

no charities but here in nyc i volunteer to work in soup kitchens or food pantry as whether or not people want to hear..but there is no such thing as the middle class anymore. Working class people are finding it hard to put food on the table so i try to help out as you may never know when you will walk in for a free bag of groceries in the future.

I like the following at this time of year:

    Heifer International:
    http://heifer.org/

Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders):
    http://www.msf.org/

    Amnesty International:
    http://amnesty.org/

I just learned this week that a QUARTER of U.S. children now live in poverty, which staggered me, so I'm actively seeking information on organizations that address their needs. If anyone has any info, please pass it along because I think this is repulsive in a country with these many resources.

    Let us see...

Topic 1: optimizing your investment portfolio to best weather a recession - investments in foreign stocks in their local exchanges, or through their shares on the NYSE?

Topic 2: Life Insurance - Term, Whole Life, or Universal Life: which is best for you?

Topic 3: Had Kaiser Wilhelm II not dismissed Otto Von Bismarck from his position as Reichskanzler in 1890, could that have averted Germany's involvement in what became the first and second world wars?

    Discuss.

I'm all for thoughtful conversation but bragging about charity donations isn't what I'd call intellectual.

Thanks for a great post, both of you.

Our thing is volunteer care, people and animals, and a weird affliction of going downtown (Vancouver) and handing out $20.00 bills to the homeless there. Merry Christmas, we think, do with it whatever makes you happy.

*laughing because we wouldn't normally share this except it's you two*

Hey OP a couple of suggestions:

Why don't you edit your thread and put the subject (charitable donations) in your heading instead of a broad "intellectual talk" header. You might be missing a ton of people who are interested in this topic because they don't know what you are talking about.

Second, it seems to me that people seem to use RJ for different reasons. Some for health tips, some to unwind, some for humor, some for "intellectual talk". I think that is a good thing .... you can participate in threads you like, avoid those you don't like.

Now for the topic at hand:

I participate in an organization that helps inner city kids play tennis after school. We supply racquets, balls, clothing....and actually set up matches and teach the game. For me, it is doing something I love and doing something I love.

Heifer International (provides impoverished families worlswide with livestock or crops and teaches them how to use that gift to make a sustainable living, which they then go on to share with others in their community) and the Ali Forney Center (center for homeless LGBT youth in NYC) both do great work.

Really participate in several, but as an advisory board member at the East Wichita YMCA, we are in the midst of our "Strong kids" campaign, to raise money for low income families for participation in YMCA activities with no or very low cost.

You're basically asking the general public to be cerebral. You should have realized that given television ratings, people are much more interested to see a hot mess of a muscular man punching a hot mess of an annoying girl in the face (Jersey Shore) than they are learning about race in the Americas a la Henry Louis Gates, Jr.
