Hey everyone, I realise I was slow on the uptake to post the 'It's Time' ad, so here's hoping I'm not slow on the uptake on this news !

Here in Queensland, Australia, we've just had a historic moment in our Parliament where the Civil Partnerships Bill legalising civil unions for same-sex couples was just passed 47-40 ! It was truly incredible to be part of the public gallery tonight.

    It went:
    *Bill passes*
*Gallery erupts in cheers and applause*
'Order in the gallery, I won't tolerate this !' ^^

Anyway, here's the link for the news !

Great news! Meanwhile Gay Americans would rather wait for 100 years to finally have gay marriage than have civil unions/partnerships now or very soon and then finally gay marriage.

    Thank you !

Although, our politics are a bit different to the US. Marriage is constitutionally a Federal head of legislative power, civil union is about the maximum that a State can legislate and grant to same-sex couples without encroaching on Commonwealth legislative territory. I'm crossing my fingers it puts pressure on the Commonwealth to introduce marriage equality though.

The opposite argument, which we saw tonight from the opposition, was 'well we've granted the gays equal rights already with taxes, social security and property, no need to go any further'. I feel the risk is that the pollies will say 'well we've granted civil unions, no need to go further'. We'll see though icon_smile.gif

This is fantastic news and a big step in the right direction.

Now that the majority of states recognise civil unions let's hope same sex marriage is not far off icon_biggrin.gif
