You try to do something for your health and it turns around and bites you. I signed up last month at Bally's because it's right around the corner from my apartment. I also never felt like I was working out effectively, so I decided "why not" I'll get a trainer. Now, LA fitness is buying out Bally's and nobody can give me a straight answer with regards to what happens to all 16 sessions. Furthermore, the Bally's membership only continues until the first of the year, then in order to continue you must sign on with LA Fitness. That's only one month, but the training sessions last at least 2 months. This is a very frustrating situation. I can almost guarantee that I will not stick with LA Fitness if I can get out of it. This is not what I need to be doing the week before pharmacy school finals, but it came with a hefty price tag to not be looking into it!!!

I belong to LA Fitness and love it. You don't have to sign any contracts as it's month to month membership so you should still be able to use your 12 sessions over the two month period.

Here's an article talking about the buyout:

    http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2011-11-18/business/chi-bally-to-sell-171-health-clubs-27-in-illinois-to-la-fitness-20111118_1_la-fitness-bally-total-fitness-clubs

Just realized that all the Illinois Bally's are being sold. Does that mean I'm automatically an L.A. Fitness member? I hope so. But probably not that straightforward.

I did not know about the 1 year limit. They are changing the clubs over today in California. Clubs are closing at 5pm today because of it. My membership does not need to be renewed until 2014. I wonder what that means for me. I originally joined Holiday Health Spa when I was 16. They used to do a really good job of taking care of their clubs. My parents had to join in order to let me join at the time. Then Bally's bought them many years later.

I wonder what they charge at LA Fitness.

Oh ok. I wasn't sure. I'm hoping that LA Fitness will mail out more info in the coming weeks for those affected by the buyout and what it'll cost in terms of membership.

Costco has the 24 Fitness deal...the price has been going up.

Right now it is 2 years for $320 (avg $13.33/mo)

It looks like in 2009, they were giving previous members a special deal to rejoin for $16/mo.

I did not hear about this. So my 99.00/a year Bally's membership is out the window? Also, I was looking into the Costco 24hr fitness membership. What happens with that after the 2 years are up?

Thanks for the responses guys. I called the corporate offices it sounds like the membership will carry over until the first of the year. At that point, you'll have to sign a contract at around $30/month (phone quote). According to the corporate employee (and my trainer), sessions sound like they carry over but obviously it will be a new trainer since he is leaving. I just went into panic mode because I literally just signed a contract and then a week later this came out. Unfortunately, I no longer have a TV to follow the news so I'm always oblivious to what is going on.

You may be able to sign up for 24hr directly on their website. Avoid the Costco middleman. B-)

I am very happy with 24hr. But, I've lived near a Super Sport in the last five places I've moved to, so I'd better be happy for the $50 a month I'm paying.

Yeah. I found this out today just before my workout. My Bally's turns over tomorrow and we're all pretty much in the dark.

Exactly. It's interesting that Bally's just sent me a year renewal and now that won't be honored. I think whatever membership you have should be honored for as long as you keep it paid and up to date.

It really does not sound very ethical to me and I question the legality of it as well. I could be wrong but I just think that just because you buy a business and change the name does not mean that you can ignore the prior obligations (contracts) of the business that you bought.

All 11 Detroit area locations were sold to LA Fitness. I just looked at the Bally's site and they are still listed as Bally's locations and they will still sell you a membership. Incidentally, the same locations are now listed on the LA fitness site, with the exception of one so it must have been too close to an existing LA Fitness. There is no indication at all on the Bally's site that these are becoming LA Fitness. Not really very respectable for a company to not give you that information and let you sign up and pay for a membership the night before they become a different gym.

one of my friends that is also a member just received an email from them that says that the monthly charges will continue under the name LA Fitness. It does not mention anything about contracts ending in a year.

According to the LA corporate rep and the trainer I was using the Bally's memberships will only be valid through the end of the year and at remaining Bally Fitness centers. The remaining gyms will only be in NY and CA, and I'm slap dab in the middle in Chicago, so I asked how that helped me. I was doing a month-by-month but I still don't want to lose the trainer (that was the most expensive part)

I think both those gyms suck, BUT call the local news channel and get 7 on your side!! Like we have in NYC and Tri State area.icon_idea.gif

Let the corporate office know you will not go awayicon_evil.gif

This is awesome. There is a Bally's right next to my job, and one down the street from my house, in addition to the LA Fitness that is near my house. So many options, so little time.

You have the option to renew it at the initial price as long as you're still a Costco member or unless 24 Hour Fit decides to change their membership policies.

Costco...does BJ's (always loved that name) have a similar membership discount?

I'm an LA Fitness member who only yesterday used a Bally's that was closer to a visiting friend who wanted to work out. He wanted a postworkout protein drink and tried to buy a Muscle Milk from a Ballys refrigerator stocked full of them but the front desk told him they couldn't sell them. Complicated buyout...

But today someone happily agreed to let me work in with him. He was in a good mood because he was a Bally's member and was using the better LA Fitness equipment for the first time.

When I went to LA fitness, they said they'd honor whatever membership you had. Not sure how others are fairing, as my home gym is pretty much shut down forever, so it could be different for other people.
