"Following the visit, pastor Melvin Thompson told Harville that his daughter and her fiance could not sing at the church again. Thompson later proposed that the church go on record saying that while all people were welcome to attend public worship services there, the church did not condone interracial marriage.

His proposal, which was accepted by a 9-6 vote last week, also suggested that married interracial couples be prohibited from becoming members and used in worship activities, except for funerals."

How interesting. I was just poo-poohed by CuriousJockAZ about how long ago this stuff was when I brought it up in that Mitt-Romney-signing-an-anti-gay marriage-pledge-of-the-religious-right topic.

We're talking specifically about the US.

    an unrelated PS :

Thanks for your kind concern about Mom yesterday. She's off the ventilator, the feeding tube is out along with the abdominal drain and today we get a prognosis on both her intestinal tract and her hip.

    Hardly surprising.

And my goodness! These idiots can't even accept a marriage between a white woman and a black man when I'm certain that the heads of this very church uphold heterosexual marriage to the umpteenth degree!

And sadly, interracial marriages are still HIGHLY looked down upon by some people. In their view, I would be a product of sin since my parents are of mixed race lineage. Then again, maybe they are just jealous since interracial children are the most beautiful children in the world. icon_wink.gif

Just another perfect example of people setting up their own man-made barriers against who people should or should not be marrying. icon_cry.gif

Yup, and interracial babies for that matter. One of my mom's coworkers warned that my sister's baby (1/4 black 1/4 latino 1/2 white) might have difficulty growing up. We're all STILL trying to figure out HOW he's going to have a problem when he's so fucking cute.

IMO interracial breeding increases variability in the gene pool. I'm all for it.

Hence the following quote from a previous post of mine:

Then again, maybe they are just jealous since interracial children are the most beautiful children in the world. icon_wink.gif

And we all know that is SO true, right? LOL.

What does her (mom's co-worker) concern, as uncalled for as it may seem, have to do with "looking down" on anything?

I think he may have been relating those who look down on interracial marriage to those who look down on interracial children by bigoted individuals. They see interracial children, like interracial marriage, as some 'sin' that society should not encourage nor support.
