When will American universities stop covering up for coaches that molest children?

How many more scandals are out there, waiting to be discovered? Are American college sports rife with child molesters, in competition with the Catholic priesthood? Watching the Daily Show brought to my attention the latest college sex assault cover up - the Syracuse University basketball coach. Last week it was the Penn State football coach. At least Penn State realized that they had to come clean and fire those in charge. Syracuse? Chancellor Cantor, who directed the cover up is still there, now admitting that "we might have done something else (meaning "If we knew that this would go public, we would have done a better job covering our ass.")
God forbid the universities might have do background checks on the coaches that interact with minors. It might cost them a few bucks out of the $millions they make off of college sports.

Sorry but the priest crap happened all over Europe as well. Covering up for pedophials is hardly an American thing.

But would a university sports figure be protected by the school as keeps happening here? I'm curious if other countries' obsession with sports teams reaches the religious fervor it does here. I know that pro football/soccer clubs may garner the same kind of blind loyalty but I have never seen evidence of it at the University level as we do. To me the priorities at PSU and other schools like it are warped. Students are supposed to be there to learn. Here you have a college where the head coach tells the university president what to do.

It'll stop when money stops being a driving factor and a college's pride, honor and status mean nothing. Til then it's anyone's guess but I imagine it won't happen anytime soon. In this day and age priorities are warped. Apparently it pays to do wrong and you know something is wrong when a coach has more pull then a university president.

Any job that hires should do a background check on people but that can only so much. Some people develop "habits" after the fact so it's not 100% foolproof. People just need to be more aware and do what's right when wrong is noticed. It's freaking scary that stuff like this goes on but I assure you something like this is probably just the tip of the iceberg and sadly it's been going on for centuries.

It's not like any of these guys had records that would come up in a background check.

Background check A: Altar boy, seminary student, priest. Cool.

Background check B: athlete, coach, rose up the ranks. Cool.

Nor is it just sports teams or universities that cover up such things.
Sandusky's charity, the Second Mile, was informed of the shower event ten years ago.
They (from what I can tell) did less than the Univeristy did.
How come no one is talking about that?!
