This week is finals week for me and then I'm off of school until mid-January. Besides working 40 hours/week, I'm trying to find things to do in Chicago over the break. I moved here pretty close to when I started school and because of studying I haven't had much time yet to explore the city. With the holiday season here I'm assuming the city has some fun things to do. Any suggestions? Where are good places to meet new people (and don't say bars)? What kinds of events are going to happen?

Maybe Santa will send some cute guys my way...haha!

If you haven't already, you should check out the Christkindlmarket in the Loop. Lots of vendors selling wares mostly from Europe. Lots of vendors actually from Europe. This really hunky German guy sold me some amaretto almonds when I went the other day, and he was more delicious than the almonds were. And they were really good.

Since you're a college student you should check out student prices for the Lyric Opera and the CSO, if that's your bag. I saw two shows at Lyric earlier this year, and this past Saturday I saw the open rehearsal for The Magic Flute that's now playing (it's pretty good). I don't know how it works in other cities, but classic performance venues in Chicago are meat-markets - if you know how to work your game during intermission.

Lots of places to ice skate. Don't go to the rink in front of the bean unless you're into tourists. Don't go to the rink at Wrigley unless you want to hang out with tools and Cubs fans. I recommend the one at University of Chicago. Smaller crowd since it's off the beaten path, and I'm pretty sure it's a regulation-sized rink.

Lastly: Go to Magnolia Bakery in the Block 37 Mall on State St. Get the banana pudding. It pretty much has crack in it.

You could take one of the architectural walking tours of Chicago, have a drink on the 95th floor of the John Hancock, go to the Art Institute or Field Museum, or just explore Halsted Street.

...yes I admit the skating in front of the bean is touristy, but worth it because it's so pretty there! icon_redface.gif

Looks like you got someone to show you around, Will! Winters here are rough, so on those cold nights it might not be so bad...

If you're looking for holiday-themed things to do, a few of my favorites are:

Caroling at Cloudgate; Friday night 6pm at The Bean in Millennium Park

Holiday Magic at Brookfield Zoo; weekend evenings and nightly between Christmas and New Years http://www.czs.org/CZS/magic

Music Box Theatre Christmas Show, double feature of White Christmas with It's A Wondeful Life, with Santa sing-a-long between the movies; always a blast!
