I'm sure there will be plenty of threads talking about Gaga, Beyonce, Britney, Adele, etc. What were the best indie and alt albums of the year???

My pick goes to Florence + The Machine "Ceremonials" ... hands down my favorite album of the year. Other favorites: Cut Copy, The Naked & Famous, VNV Nation, Zola Jesus

    Top alternative lists:
Stereogum: Girls 'Father, Sun, Holy Ghost' (never even heard of that!)
    Amazon: tUnE-yArDs 'whokill'
About.com: Julianna Barwick 'The Magic Place'

    UPDATE
Pitchfork's Best Albums of 2011 isn't out yet, but they have named the best song of the year: M83 "Midnight City." Not a bad pick. (FYI: Bon Iver's "Holocene" is #2)

I thought alternative music died by 2000.

Don't get me wrong, I love alternative. Sublime, chili peppers, smashing pumpkins, ect. But now we have many different rock genres that kinda came out of alternative such as indy, garage rock, stoner metal and other genres. Anything made after the 90s is real hard to classify as alternative.

Then again genres are just labels anyway. And I haven't heard of most of the people you named. So maybe alternative is still around, just not nearly as popular or prevalent.

I'm seeing Bon Iver on nearly every list (plus up for several Grammy awards). I just couldn't get in to that CD, maybe I need to give it another listen.

When they announced Bon Iver I had to look them up. I had never heard of them. Listened to the CD. Not my cup of tea.

I knew someone was going to take issue with the term alternative. icon_wink.gif

It's not my favorite word either to describe music. But I'm not sure what else to call it... and I didn't want to call it the "Anti-Gaga" thread (even though that's what it is). For the record, the alternative rock format station on Sirius XM is called Alt Nation and plays many of the artists I listed so the word is still used, though they also play Coldplay which I'd hardly call alternative anymore. I mostly listen to alternative electronica (gah, I hate that word too!)

Good taste. I've had M83 on heavy rotation... it's epic and ambitious, maybe too ambitious with too much filler. I HATE that frog song! And unfortunately, I don't love it as much as I love Saturdays=Youth so that's probably why it hasn't won me over.

The Cut Copy album is so frakkin good, I go back and forth whether it's my favorite album of the year.

but yeah, Saturdays=Youth is still my favorite.

And same thing happens to me with Zonoscope, I love it but not as much as In Ghost Colours.

Same for me. I gave it a chance after reading the reviews even though it's not usually what I listen to. It was okay I guess. Maybe good study music.

I use Alternative and Indie interchangeably. The people at Pitchfork would probably butcher me!

Florence is like Art Rock... which I'd definitely cover under Alternative

Not a bad year for music. I'm still deliberating, but a couple of note:

Gang Gang Dance - Eye Contact
    Wild Flag - Wild Flag

Girls, of course, and EMA put out interesting records too. I'm biased here but the Corin Tucker Band's "1,000 Years" was also on heavy rotation on my pod.

I need to add my $0.02 and say that I cannot stand Florence. Awful.

Deer Tracks released Part One and Part Two of The Archer Trilogy this year. Part Three is coming in 2012. They have recently gotten some more attention as the opening act for 80's goth icon Sisters of Mercy.

For me this year has been kinda a breath of fresh air as far as the Indie music I am finding. There are so many new and different sounds out there that I am always finding something new to be excited about.
