So, I work in an area of town that I guess you could say is kind of rough. Today, this girl, while I was in the middle of explaining something about her medicine to her, blurted out, "You look good." I kind of laughed and said, "Thank you." And without missing a beat continued explaining to her what I was in the middle of. I might have turned a little red. icon_redface.gif

I guess my question is more or less: How do you handle compliments from random people like that in the professional setting. I feel like it is out of line to reciprocate such a compliment even of the person does "look good". How would you handle that?

Lol, when I'm not on my phone I'll have to sen you a pic to prove to you Paul. There are a few on RJ that will vouch though.

No one is going to respond?! Surely someone has been given a random compliment and not been sure they handled it correctly..

I say thanks usually, unless its one of my friends. If its one of my friends they know to expect something really sarcastic like

    "I know"

    or

"you think I don't know this? slap yourself."

its a compliment, enjoy them ENJOY THEM!!!!!

Yeah, I thought that I handled it okay by accepting it and moving on..... Until the guy that was driving her started laughing. Normally, I would offer a compliment of some kind in return. But for some reason I felt that would be inappropriate since I was at work. Lol

Something about this exchange seemed odd.. I think she caught me off guard since I was in the middle of explaining something important about her medicine and she interrupted me with that. I just hope I didn't come off as smug with only saying, "Thanks." and brushing over it.

I smile and say thanks, then carry on about my business.

Although, a butch female bouncer at a bar I went to for my birthday a few weeks ago called me ''breakfast, lunch and dinner'', told me I wasn't leaving without taking her number, whispered into my ear and lightly held me whilst doing so, telling me I should stop the '' pussy hunt'' as I've pulled... She was also about twice my age, and size. I played it off as a banter and laughed. She proceeded to walk past me in the bar several times with her phone in her hand... Awkward icon_lol.gif

I also casually pepper-spray the really repulsive and persistent. It's awesome.

Just this week a perfect stranger complimented me by saying I looked like Fred Armisen (a first). How could I not thank her?

One time I was at the Gap trying on this really cute top and the sales woman said my boobs looked really good in it. I truly didn't know how to respond! For one thing my boobs did not look good in the said top, it was red you know and red never makes the girls pop right on me. Also I wasn't looking for my boobs to look good in the top I was looking for a boring shirt to wear to work. Well stunned in everyway possible I simply took the shirt off and left the store. I never did go back to that Gap but I have heard that it has been turned into a ghetto Dairy Queen owned by a man named Tina.

So OP I totally know how ya feel.

This is something I did VERY POORLY as a kid. I have extremely light blue eyes and thus I would receive compliments on them very often so after a while I just started saying "I know". It was a while before I realized that I came off like an ass so by the end of high school I finally learned to say "thank you" and more recently I tack on "I got them from my dad".

Accepting compliments from strangers with grace.

I accept no compliments from strangers. If one dares attempts it, I insult him or her, and tell them to go away. No one is allowed to approach me whom I do not know. That is a violation of privacy & manners, and if they aren't aware of that, they deserve whatever insult I give them. I even enjoy watching them wilt when they realize their error.

LOL I call bullshit. You are one of the most well-mannered people on here.

I am awkward about physical compliments and they are generally inappropriate in the workplace. Once two (heavy) women pointed out that I looked kinda jacked in whatever I was wearing and asked if I was taking Stacker II (brand of ephedrine OTC weight-loss formula). Considering I'm trying to get BIGGER and they clearly WEREN'T, I was kind of at a loss, so I was just like "Thanks, and no, that stuff is dangerous."

I'm generally gracious, unless it comes off as creepy, and dis-genuine, or inappropriate.
