Hey, I think I'm going to be studying in Rio de Janeiro for a few weeks in May.. What's it like? Is it safe? What's gay life like?

Its like, gay capital of South America...

And like all places in the world... some places are safe, and others you should avoid at all costs.... just ask the locals where to go and where to avoid

I'm going in three weeks or so. I'm pretty stoked but I'd be a liar to say that I'm not at least a little bit concerned about personal safety.

Would you consider Buenos Aires or Rio as the most gay friendly city in SA?

Is it true that it's one of the most dangerous cities in the world?

    I was born in Rio.

It is was one of the greatest cities in the world. It's just as dangerous as any other major city. Don't go to unfamiliar places at night. Don't get too friendly with people you don't know. Don't stay out too late at night. Don't wear obvious tourist apparel. The people are really laid back but dress well so make sure you dress to blend in with the locals or you will stand out and be a target.

If you abide by all the same rules you would in any other major city you will be fine and really enjoy the place.

I absolutely love Rio. You have to go to Porcao brazilian restaraunt in Impanema. There are many other Brazilian steakhouses, but none quite as good as Porcao... go hungry!

Rio is a great city and really no more dangerous than any other world city. You might be surprised to find yourself blending in with the other carioca's as I did but can also work the other way around and the locals spot you from a distance. Really helps if you have portugese or even spanish, just makes for a different experience if you can communicate in the local language. Explore, make friends, keep it hot and safe, todo bem.
