    Hi guys,

I'd always been short-haired guy until recently, I have this crazy idea that I'd like to let my hair grow at least once in my life.

    So, now it is growing.

But it does irritate me. The hair growing around my ears feels like there is constantly flies tickling my ears. I tried to gel it behind my ears.

My question is: do I need to go to a hairdresser to get them to somehow "re-arrange" my hair? or do I just let it grow and grow. Some guys have such nice long hair I wonder how they managed to do it.

My brother told me that I have to "layer" my hair as I go along. Not sure what I should tell the hairdresser as I don't want to sound stupid.

    Please help!!!

Well like my partner you are Asian, so your hair will need to be treated differently then others. I would suggest (if possible) going to a barber/hairdresser that is used to cutting Asian men's hair. Your brother is right about the "layering", that is exactly what my partner does.

BTW, if you do not cut hair it will stop growing eventually. With some people it will stop not far below the shoulders, with others it can go all the way down their back to around their knees.

Waaaaaay back in college I decided to grow a pony tail. In the middle stages it was hard to hold into any particular style, so I just wore a baseball cap all the time.

If that's not an option, you could try tapering the hair immediately around your ears so it's shorter and less annoying. That could work, while letting the rest get longer... And still gives you lots of options.

Mom always told my sister to never date a man with prettier hair than you have. I decided that advice was not for me, but its good advice. Pony tails and long hair on men are really not my thing, personally.

Even if you're growing it out, you need to get it cut every couple of months or so just to get the ends off, and even them up.
Plus it helps with maintenance around the ears and such like you were saying.

the mid-length is the most annoying, until it gets long enough to go in a pony tail.

Mine was down to just past my shoulders about a year ago, before i chopped it all off again.

Right now, there's a dichotomy in men's hairstyles

It's either .... shaved to a crew cut

    or long
the long haired look that's in right now is a choppy look
with the ends longer than the rest

    Recently I've done the former
    and cut it all off
Now Everytime I look in the mirror I get startled icon_wink.gif

If I could get myself to cut my hair short like you have now, I'd dye it blonde-dirtyblonde, and color it to suit my moods.

I'd say try what you want with your hair and go with the best look for your head and lifestyle. I have a kind of natural, messy look sort of like a blond Jason Bateman. I like it - and it looks great on me. My friends and dates all like it too. I have it trimmed every two weeks - and this is an easy look to keep. I don't spend a lot of time on myself.

I don't want to start a flame war, particularly on RealJock, but I have to say I'm extremely jealous of Asian guys' hair. It's so thick you can do anything you want with it. Going from thin hair to my current (and perpetual) non-hair look has made me look jealously on the Tokyo pop guys who can effortlessly pull off architectural 'dos, bed head, or high and tight with aplomb.
And Asian guys with pompadours are extra-cool, particularly when they're Asian Elvis impersonators (IMHO)

That said, if you just let it go way - Crystal Gayle - long and leave it straight... eh. That only looks good in manga.

    Just my ยข2.

I'm regretting getting a buzzcut. The last few months I grew my hair to the longest it's ever been in a decade or so, something like 4 inches. I figured it was also time to go for the shortest cut I've had in a decade. Meh...

I wish I'd let the barber just go with whatever he feels like. A mohawk would've been cool. LOL. Even dreadlocks or something.

As for Asian hair, meh, I envy Caucasian hair because it's so fine (at least the finer ones). 3 of my sisters all have the black hair that is just brown when held up to light, from our Spanish blood, I guess. It's so fine that it falls straight down.

My bro on the other hand has curly jet-black hair. Me and another of my sisters have the wavy jet-black hair of southeast asians, not exactly the bluish-black of far eastern asians though. And it's a drag. It's thick and it always seems to stick out everywhere LOL.

I'm going to grow out my hair again. I think I'd look samurai in a topknot! ROFL

I don't want to sound mean...but do you just want to be white? Based on all your posts it seems that to you everything white is the epitome of perfection.

    I am just curious

i've grown my hair out twice.

my hair is crazy thick, stubbornly straight.

one asian to another: just let the awkward stage be; cutting only prolongs it -- and with our hair, that means ugly disaster. wear a cap, let it be.

also: comb your hair plenty and take lots of vitamins. supposedly this stimulates growth.

and be prepared to spend more money than you had anticipated on this little project. long hair haircare (particularly on asians) is a bitch.

*sigh*... docmarvy admired Asian hair, did you assume he wants to be Asian? Yes, it sounds mean.

Not to repeat my reply to Titanite in the Erotic Racism thread, but yes I am very attracted to Caucasians PHYSICALLY, does that make me Micheal Jackson?

With long hair it's really important to get it trimmed regularly, I go once a month. Otherwise, it becomes really unruly really quickly. A trim gives it shape and keeps it looking nice. That said, I might chop off all my hair this weekend.

I like the style in your photos. But, I know it's fun to change your hair now and then (grow, cut, grow again)
I like a lot of "vintage" styles. I think you'd look good with your hair slicked back in a pomp. I've seen Asian men with this style and it looks great. Try researching old pictures of these early rock&roll artists: the Rocky Fellers, the Blue Diamonds...those guys had style!

This thread was just what I needed. I also decided to let it grow for once, but now it just stopped growing and is hard to arrange. So, I just need to get my ends cut? and what is meant with layering? I am not sure how to explain that to a Guatemalan

hey, thank you guys! I didn't expect so many of you came to my rescue!! icon_smile.gif

Yes, I will try to find a hairdresser who's good at cutting oriental hair. I'll ask him to "layer" my hair and tell him to guide me through...

It's strange how this discussion went the way of discussion about "Asian hair". I'm a political scientist by training and I can tell you that the term Asian is a notion invented in Europe. I like the term "oriental" to describe myself, as how they do it in the UK, as "Asia" is just whatever that is not "Europe" on the old continent.

Yes, I do have hair like the Japanese! icon_smile.gif It is really easy to maintain when it is short. I can twist it, turn it, bend it, gel it in a bunch. You name it, I can do it.

Alas, long hair looks so good on white guys! I'm thinking Legolas in the Lord of the Rings... OK too ambitious. Give me a few more months guys, and I'll keep you guys posted on how I look like then!! ;)

    A different perspective.

When I grew my hair out, I followed the advice of others to the effect of 'just leave it alone,' and I'm glad I did. I did not get a trim or any kind of haircut for about three years. During the awkward stage, I wore a baseball cap, and never worried about how I looked. After three years, I had the ends trimmed and the hair straightened (with irons, not chemically) about once a year.

Of course, my hair texture is probably different from yours and the style I was aiming for (pure hippie, all the same length) was probably different, too.

I really miss my long hair, but (dammit) my attractiveness to gay men increased when I cut it off.

yeah...but it seems like your attraction to caucasians transcends typical sexual attraction to a desire to be white in every sense of the word (if you could)

Okay what made you say that? Mind-reading? icon_lol.gif This is honestly getting tiring. It's a veiled insult. icon_neutral.gif

Yes, honestly, I'd love to look more like my brother. And I'm probably getting rhinoplasty if I had the money, just because I'd look better to MYSELF. But white 'in every sense of the word'?! If you mean bleached skin, dyed hair, contact lenses... WTF?! HELL NO! icon_razz.gif

I mean really, what makes you say 'I want to be white in every sense of the word'? icon_confused.gif

    Stop misinterpreting my words, please.
