I wanted to know if anyone knew anything. All my friends are so far fine, but Jesus Christ I am supposed to be there. News is coming out slowly and I'm terribly afraid of everyone I know. If anyone knows anything please post here:

Not this again. I went to school just two hours north of VT icon_cry.gif

To think I was offered admission to this school!

It's so scary and very very very sad.

An awful reminder that we do not need guns on campus:

    Engineering gone postal? icon_eek.gif

Fortunately all my friends I knew there already graduated some years ago. I don't know anyone at the school now. No one to worry about. But how terrible to have this happen to them again even at a small scale.

It's that crazy ass time of year again.... just yesterday at my school they activated our text/phone alert system because of a power outage to our data center. Phones, Internet, Network was completely out for a good 6 hours in the middle of finals. Scary part was having beers with a few other grads in waiting at the bar and all of our phones ringing at the exact same time and mine (having a special siren ringtone assigned to our alert line). 10 guys going "WHAT THE FUCK?!" and me saying... "OH SHIT! WHAT HAPPENED NOW?!" Sad day. I hope they catch the bastard. What worries me now are copy cats, pranks, and stupid republicans trying to stress the fact that this is why concealed handguns should be allowed on campus. Mess.icon_rolleyes.gif

It's a big school. Hell, I think there's more life on campus than in the town of Blacksburg. There's nothing of interest in Blacksburg. VT is pretty much all that's there. I hope this wasn't to bring a little bit of excitement icon_cry.gif

I was there for four years (post April 16th) and I was safer there than I am here. Things like this are rare but not entirely uncommon at large universities like Tech, but the schools are usually quick to stop these stories from leaking. The only difference here is that Virginia Tech is under a microscope.

The day after the shootings in April 2007 was the most awkward day I ever had in all my years of school. Being only two hours away at JMU, everyone was really shocked and quite nervous. Who wouldn't be after something like that happening so close to home? But I remember going about my day and how nearly everyone was at a loss for words. No one really knew what to say including professors and instructors. Some professors were conflicted about talking about the shootings during class or carrying on business as usual.

    Already over per CNN?

Seems the second body could be the original shooter as the gun used was found with him. Perhaps a case of a traffic stop where he had something illegal in the car with him and shot the officer to try and escape. The reality set in and shot himself...?

No, the officer pulled over a car, but the shooter was not who he pulled over. He came up and shot the officer while he was still in his patrol vehicle. I'm a student here at VT, still hard to believe what happened today - just doesn't make any sense.

Very sad. As a VT graduate, my sympathy goes out to the families and community. This is a random act, just as the 2007 shootings were. Unfortunately, sometimes lightning does strike twice.

    This is what I've heard.

All the guys from VT who've posted about VT are correct. It is actually a safe place, but under a microscope. It was freaky to see every major news broadcaster (even international) put up a story. I'm glad it is over and that all my friends are safe.

safe or not, there is a seemingly unusual amount of violence at that school... wasn't tech also the school where that guy decapitated a girl in a coffee shop because she wouldn't go out with him?

The beheading that happened almost 200 meters from my dorm room? Yeah:

I've also been told they met because he was assigned to help her acclimate to the United States. A sort of foreign student buddy system, but I don't know know the validity of that.

I'm curious to see if the shooter was actually a VT student. I hope it was not.

I'm sure you know this by now, but he was a part time Radford student who was also the guy who stole a car from his landlord.

Yeah I read that. Its kinda sick, but I'm really glad the shooter was not a VT student. Still incredibly sad that a Radford guy did it. I wonder why.

Yea, I'd be curious to know if they find evidence for a motive. I can't decide what would comfort me more, the fact that he had a motive but could still be calculated enough to follow through with it, or knowing some random person would do a senseless murder on the whim.
