Based on studies of metro areas with large gay populations, Broward County, in which Ft. Lauderdale is located, has been repeatedly identified as having the highest per capita rate of HIV in the US. Another thread lists Miami as 25%, NYC as 30%. It could easily be over 30% in FtL.

If you visit here, be extra sure to wrap up. There are bowls of free condoms in many locations where gay people go.

This is an interesting article about the problem and some measures that may be taken to require HIV testing. Routine HIV testing for everyone could become the standard for other metro areas with high HIV rates.

CNN had a great article on how HIV is neglected in the southeast.

Actually, Ft. Lauderdale is a small city with a resident population of about 165,000. However, it's the #1 gay vacation destination in the US. There's a constant stream of visitors from North America, South America, and Europe.

You're certainly right about it being a "party town' - both for visitors and locals. I tend to think of Miami and FtL as Sodom and Gomorrah. To be fair to FtL, SoBe in Miami is probably even more out of control.

FtL is becoming a major center for gay porn studios. The beach and some of the guest house properties make nice backdrops, with lots of eye candy for extras.

I agree with the idea that HIV testing should be routine during patient check ups. Question is, at what age do you feel this testing should begin?

It doesn't matter if they are 14 or 40, if the person is sexually active then they need routine HIV testing.

My ex got really really angry that I got an HIV test, even though we had been together for years. I wasn't implying anything, but it didn't go over well at all. My rationale was that it is better to have peace of mind with a yearly test.

A 30% prevalence seems awfully high. If it is in fact the case, the majority of these cases are have to be among heterosexuals, as I doubt gays account for 10% of Broward's population. I think what you mean is a 30% increase in the number of new (recorded) infections.

Yes, it is high. But we're not talking about a 30% increase. I meant 30% of the gay population could be HIV+. That's why it's being considered an epidemic.

Another thread in the HIV/AIDs Forum cited a study in which the percentage of gay men with HIV in Miami was found to be 25%, and in NYC, 29%.

If you read the article for which I provided a link, it stated that FtL is higher than Miami.

I don't know the percentage of Broward's population that is gay. But I can tell you that the city of Wilton Manors, which is the gay capital of FL, and adjacent to FtL, is 40% gay.
