One night in Bangkok

I have a 36 hour layover in Bangkok before catching a flight to Phuket for scuba diving. My original plan was to stay at the convenient, yet overpriced Novotel airport hotel for 2 nights at $300/night. That just seems wrong for so many reasons. There seem to be so many better options downtown, yet I know I will have limited stamina/ambition to do much since my flight gets in at midnight.

Any recommendations from anybody who has been to the city? I'd like to have a nice pool, nice place to eat, and maybe one touristy thing to do and easy transportation to and from the airport (sounds like the airport train stops at midnight).

    How about Sofitel in Silom?

This area is still very well alive after midnight and is close to gay places (which may or may not matter to you).

Taxi ride is just about 30 minutes from downtown and would cost you not more than 200 baht (7 dollars). To be honest, I have never taken the train to the airport as taxi is much more convenient. The stations of the airport rail are not very well positioned.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

I usually stay at one of the nicer places on Koa San road. I really like DJ Station at night, good atmosphere, but don't get there until 11. This will give you time to check out a ping pong show first ;-)

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm going to try the Dream Hotel this time. It sounds like it has everything I was looking for.
