Housing/roommate in SF

I just started looking for housing in SF 2 weeks ago and it's getting pretty discouraging. I've never seen a more competitive roommate search. Anyone with similar experiences have any tips? I've only been using Craigslist so far, but there has to be a better way.

It took me a year to get my spot. My suggestion, put up a posting, check it every day, and yes it is crazy competative but can pay off. I currently pay 750 a month in rent in SF and I only have one roommate (love you rent control!)

Have you tried just walking through the neighborhoods you like? Not everyone uses Craigslist to rent out apartments. And sometimes that's a good thing.

Also, "word of mouth", and try the LGBT center bulletin board.

What is your budget? I have a spare room in Palo Alto (27 miles south of SF)

I tried this it doesnt work. In fact, the LGBT center encourages you to use Craigslist.

I had a guy fly up from LA just to see and snag my room. Guess I could have asked for more than $800.

I'm looking for something in the $1100-1350 range, although I do want to live in SF proper.

Areas of interest: Castro, Mission Dolores, Noe Valley, Alamo Sq/NOPA, SOMA, Nob Hill

Roommate or studio? You should be able to find a studio in that range.

I am looking at both, but I'd rather have a roommate and share a nicer place than find an okay studio.

Another gay in SF. Isn't the whole 'homosexual going to find himself in SF' angle a bit 1970s? Ew.

Its about as 1970's as hiding your identity while socializing with gay men, faceless clone.

A lot of landlords have property management companies or realtors handle their rental properties.

Contact as many as you can, and provide them with all the information that would make them want to choose you. Write it up just like an employment resume, except you will be selling yourself as the perfect tenant.

Use "bullet points" rather than long, run-on sentences and paragraphs that no one will take the time to read.

Provide your employment information and your contact information. Provide a reference from your previous landlord, if possible.

    Include a cover letter.

Interested in North Beach area? Walk to downtown. Not sure where you're working or what you want to be close to but I know a place that will be opening in January in North Beach. It's a shared 2 bedroom, older place. Let me know if you're interested. I think it's $950/mo and might be a temporary spot if you're interested. I think it's also a furnished bedroom.
