RJ e-mail to be deleted after 180 days beginning December 17; QUESTION FOR CHRIS...

Just saw a red-font notice in my inbox that e-mail older than 180 days will be deleted to save space. Not sure how long it's been there, or if this has been discussed already, for please forgive me if I'm duplicating a topic.

Question for Chris: is there a method in which we can download our sent and received e-mail in bulk, to our own personal storage? I'd like to archive my e-mail if possible, but not individually one at a time. Thanks

I brought this up in another thread, but it would really nice if we had an option to receive a copy of messages to our registered email addresses, instead of the simple "you have new RJ mail" notification.

For me, that's a major convenience because if the message is important, then I can read it without having to log into the RJ site. And let's face it, the RJ search sucks. If I wanted to search for an old email, my gmail can easily find it.

I never knew about that, as I have a few "official" emails from over a year ago that need to be archived (printed a hard copy, but like the digital archive).

If offsite archival storage is needed, check out dreamhost.com. It offers UNLIMITED storage, upload, and download...VERY fast, and supports high traffic. I've been using them for over 6 years with a 99.998% uptime.

But how do I move my entire RJ e-mail account in bulk? I can't do this one at a time.

It makes sense to save space... though it´s sad that I lose messages from friends in the past. I loved being able to read them. I have some great friends on here.

Is there some way we can save them?

Copy/paste/save as a text file. Or download a free PDF print driver, and save them as PDF files.

That was for Chris. It's an alternative to deleting a bunch of stuff then dealing with the backlash from members.

Um, Yeah. The issue is, out of the 7000 plus messages are you expecting me to go through and manually cut and paste the ones I want to keep?

Really now guys. Do you need to hoard old email messages? If you're truly friends with someone they'll email within 180 days so you don't lose contact.

Let it go. It's OK. And if a message is so beautifully written, print it out and frame it. icon_wink.gif

LOL. Of course not. Just a suggestion in case you needed to save a few important emails right away. I mean December 17 isn't too far away. And I doubt the RJ admins will add a feature to let us save emails within that time frame.

Don't forget to B&hammer the verbosity coming from user "Pouncer", and for that matter - let's consider auto-deleting any post with the words "Palestine" and "Israel" within 20 words of each other.

How the fuck did this thread go from email deleting to Palisrael in under 15 posts?

    Oh wait, it's RJ... icon_lol.gif

LOL another way to deal with that is to disable accounts proven to be shills for the Iranian govt. No need for the site to support Iran's program to cyber-infiltrate the West.

We can block a user or ignore his posts. I don't do that, but I wish there was away to block a thread so I don't keep having to see it. Sometimes when the participants of these Israel/Palestine threads are in full argument mode, you can several of them at once at the top of a forum category and they have pushed newer threads far down the list. Much of the time they do not even belong in the forum category where it is placed. I would prefer to just get them out of the way, along with many of the guy above you threads, so I can focus on threads that have more interest to me. I don't care if ever see those stupid 'brown eyes', 'blue eyes', 'green eyes' threads again.

    Hey guys,

We've moved the date to January 15. We're also going to add a link so you can download your old emails as a single text file. I'm hoping to have that up in the next week or so.

    Thanks,

    Chris

Great, Chris, thanks! I haven't used this single text file approach before, but I trust it'll accomplish what I had hoped, an easy download of all e-mails to an offline personal archive.

    Chris,

Good news. Thanks. Would it be possible to embed a special character in between emails to facilitate any post processing? Also if it is easy to separate inbox from sent that might be helpful - less need to parse.
