Some pretty good first round matches so far. Spain completely dominated Russia today,
Villa was amazing--and the Netherlands upset Italy (World Cup winner 2006) yesterday...brilliant! Second round match-ups should be pretty good. Kind of sad England didn't qualify.

"Group of Death" goes today...Italy tries to save face vs. Romania after their embarassing 3-0 loss to Netherlands last time out and France will try and get a victory after lackluster tie with Romania.

    TiVO is a wonderful thing...

Gotta root for Italy because they have the best uniforms (and they look good in them)...

I drove through downtown Stuttgart last night shortly after they lost to Croatia. Who knew they had so many Croatians here?
The co-workers were pretty blunt about Germany playing badly though. No good odds on who'll be in the finals yet.

    Italy 1 Romania 1...

Apparently Italy's goalkeeper stopped a PK in the 80th minute to preserve tie and keep their slim hopes of advancing alive. Italy will probably need to beat France on Tuesday to Advance to the Quarters...

It was Mutu who missed the PK...it was a pretty weak kick...he knew he should have scored and the miss totally took his head out of the game.

And right now the Netherlands are playing pretty well.
    They're up one on France.

I think Turkey is considered Eastern Europe along with Poland, Russia and the Czech Republic.

Gonna head out for a late lunch and try and catch the 2nd half of Netherlands/France...Dutch are lookin' like a strong contender for the title in the early going...

I know Turkey's is trying or already has been approved to join the European Union, so that may have some determination of them playin in Euro '08.

Caught 2nd half of Dutch dominance of France, 4-1. They are thru to Quarters. Robben made an amazing assist and a great goal (thanks to some poor GK'ing by France) in 2nd half. Score one for the folically challenged!

    Weekend Update...

Group A play is complete...Portugal finished first and Turkey overcame a 2-0 deficit with 15 minutes left to defeat the heavily favored Czech side 3-2 and grab the 2nd slot - eliminating the Czech Republic and Switzerland from Euro 2008.

Group B play concludes today. Croatia has already secured a spot in the final 8 and will play Poland today. Poland would need a win and some help from host Austria to advance. Germany - the favorite coming in - will try and regroup from their loss to Croatia and secure the second spot with a victory against Austria. An upset win by Austria would most likely advance the hosts to the Final 8.

Tomorrow the "Group of Death" - Group C - will finish up with an exciting France/Italy battle. Netherlands has been the surprise of the tournament so far and probably is now seen as the team to beat in the entire tournament. If they decide to rest their players tomorrow vs. Romania, there's a good chance Romania could get a victory, which would eliminate BOTH Italy and France...

I agree - just from an "eye candy" point of view, glad to see the Italians advance...

Today Sweeden and Russia battle for the final spot and Spain rests it's players for the Quarters...

Spain is playing really well--I think they'll take Italy.

Good game y'day between Germany and Portugal--Portugal could have had it, if they hadn't got so rattled; nice to see Germany move on though I guess.

I was watching the Turkey vs. Germany game while working out yesterday. Germany won damn them, but they are the better team.

I am cheering now for Spain all the way! Unfortunately the final game conflicts with gay pride in Toronto, maybe I will catch the last 25 minutes or so of the game.
