That was awesome --- and so glad you posted this. This video is a shining example of gays making a difference in a respectful and powerful way. The speaker's notion that "This was an opportunity to turn this around" was spot on. There is no doubt in my mind that these two lesbians, and the approach they took -- calm, measured, well-thought out, and respectful -- putting a face on a gay family, moved mountains in terms of changing the mind of the ignorant of mayor.

    I wouldn't count on it.

    From the Advocate...

At a city council meeting last week, Amy Weber, with her female spouse and daughters in tow, gently prodded Troy, Mich. mayor Janice Daniels about an antigay Facebook posting Daniels' wrote.

Daniels was elected in November as a Tea Party candidate; in June, she wrote the following Facebook message: "I think I'm going to throw away my I Love New York carrying bag now that queers can get married there," in response to New York state's decision to legalize marriage equality

I wish there was still a video of me, because I know the local TV channel was there recording. The camera was right on my face.

It was a public, broadcast hearing in 2002 to decide whether the Fargo, North Dakota YMCA would give family discount memberships to "non-traditional" families, like gay & lesbian.

I started by introducing myself as a retired Army Colonel, who had been a YMCA member in facilities around the US for over 30 years. I watched the pro-gay attendees go rigid in their chairs, expecting the worst. I politely thanked the board members for this opportunity to speak, and praised their bringing this controversial topic to a public hearing.

I then explained why I thought gay & lesbian families should be allowed the same reduced membership rate as any other family. You could have heard a pin drop. When I finished there was a thunderous applause from the gay contingent there. But more importantly, the measure passed, and non-traditional families were granted the family membership rate.

I'm not sure if it was me, because the decision makers were the board members. They really get the credit. But so it was. And like this mother in the clip, I stood there in front of the cameras and said my thing. Would you guys do the same? I hope you would, because this is what we need to do, and a lot more of it.

That quotes rings a bell. I read it a few weeks ago but had no idea who actually said it. The mom did a great job getting her point across, and it always hits you a little deeper when you get kids involved.

That was a standing ovation moment. In this moment it didn't hurt that the cause any that the Mommy's are hot and oh so fem and frilly - a real we are just like you moment. I point this out because if it was two butch lesbians or two queen gay men that gave the same talk the validity should be the same and we aren't there yet.

    It's all baby steps.

They're acting like girls because they are girls. Liking other girls doesn't mean one or both people should act more like a man and I'm glad they aren't confounding the two because acting has nothing to do with inherent sexuality.

    Great video all the same.

Being butch doesnt mean acting like a man, its an expression of one's interest and personality.

    GoogleSearch "Define: Butch"

    butch
    /bo═ŁoCH/
Adjective: Manlike or masculine in appearance or behavior, typically aggressively or ostentatiously so.

Noun: A mannish lesbian, often contrasted with a more feminine partner.

    Synonyms: masculine - mannish

Butch isn't liking cars or camping or other things that are attributed to personality. It's defined by people who act in a way because it's the way men act when men only act that way because they are men, not because they are hetero or homo.

That was incredibly sweet and wise.

It's funny how the kids teach the adult a lesson on being a grown up

So the message of this story is that lesbians don't let their kids paint with glitter?

37% of Troy's registered voters want Mayor to resign.
    41.4% view her unfavorably.
44.7% said they would vote to recall her.
28.4% disapprove of her job performance.

Considering that this is hardly a front page story or the top story on the local news here in the Detroit area, these numbers should be troubling to her. One thing working in her favor is that a mayor in Troy cannot be recalled until having been in office for six months and she only began in November. Also the county has an openly gay commissioner that said he does not think she should be recalled when asked about the controversy.

At least for once it was attractive lesbians. Its usually the butchy manly ones that just frighten people bitching at elected officials.

    Kudos.

This two minute speech was more effective than one million gay pride parades!
