PHOENIX (AP) — The federal government issued a scathing report Thursday that outlines how Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office has committed a wide range of civil rights violations against Latinos, including a pattern of racial profiling and discrimination and carrying out heavy-handed immigration patrols based on racially charged citizen complaints.
The report, obtained by The Associated Press ahead of its release, is a result of the U.S. Justice Department's three-year investigation of Arpaio's office amid complaints of racial profiling and a culture of bias at the agency's top level.

You know what makes the whole "racial discrimination" charge when it comes to hispanics so hilariously stupid? The fact that on the census a latino is considered "white" first and foremost and the "latino" is "of any race" is simply regarded as an additional attribute or characteristic.

So according to the census a "white/latino" can't be treated as "non-white" and therefore susceptible to be racially discriminated against for being "non-white" since they are considered "white" on the census.

I've put "hispanic or latino of any race" before on certain documents asking me for my ethnicity and yet most people would think it absurd if I were to ever accuse someone of racially discriminating against me for being "non-white". A blonde Spanish person can check "hispanic or latino of any race" if they choose to do so.

the MCSO isn't profiling "white" latinos. icon_rolleyes.gif

what i find more disturbing is the 2nd article where the MCSO let sexual assault cases go uninvestigated b/c the victims were latinas, some as young as 13 y/o.

How do you know this? And how exactly are you going to differentiate what is a "white" or "dark" latino? Apparently anyone who has checked "hispanic or latino of any race" after checking "white" can make the case that they were "racially profiled" if they have been involved in anything investigative? The feds are using these patterns of "hispanic or latino of any race" being allegedly profiled, so how are they determining who is white and who isn't? If they are truly considered "white" according to the census then how can they be racially profiled?

Again, calling any of this "racial profiling" is absolutely absurd. What if someone said that profiling Germans to be nazis is "racial profiling"? Pretty stupid huh?

what a specious argument. it's "obvious" latinos who r being profiled. did u even read the articles on US citizens of latino descent who r being held in violation of habeas corpus?

Wow you are dense. A pure spaniard who is blonde haired and blue-eyed and Mexican can check the "hispanic or latino of any race". Our census does not make latino or hispanic a different race, only a qualification in addition to race. There has to be a DIFFERENT RACE involved for something to be racist, right?

Again, our census does not differentiate between a spaniard mexican or a super dark mexican.

If the feds are looking for a "racial discrimination" pattern by looking at how someone is categorized on the census they won't be able to find it by merely looking at "hispanic or latino of any race".

Nope that's not what I'm saying, I'm saying that if the feds are looking for that "hispanic or latino of any race" factor in order to try to find some pattern of racial discrimination from Arpaio (which is the only thing they can go by in order to try to find some pattern) they are failing miserably. And of course, so are you at defending them in supposedly finding a pattern of "racial discrimination". It's bogus, even for someone engaging in a cursory examination of the charges.

Ive been a guest of his in Tent City 2 times. He treats every one equally. AS CRIMINALS.

He is doing his job and has always been a target of the Democrats. He is a good sheriff and the crime rate in Maricopa County has gone down as he has cracked down.

I think profiling is just fine. You dont see white dudes sneaking across the bordrer.

    Hate to say it.

Oh on the sex crimes issue? It was first brought up in 2007 and resolved. These idiot groups want him out of office so bad. If he chooses to not run again I certainly hope we get someone else just like him.

I personally wish Paul Babeau would run for governor of AZ. This link is from a liberal rag here. This was my first thought in this situation.

Feds also say they have the authority to force citizens to purchase a good or service from a private entity.

Feds also say cell phones need to be banned in cars.

Feds also say that Solyndra is "the new green economy of America."

This is the same DOJ whose policies resulted in the death of Brian Terry.

I dont buy any of it.

It's pretty obvious that Arpaio has violated people's civil rights as does do the "driving while Mexican" laws.

While the death of Terry is unfortunate, being a border guard is an inherently dangerous job. And the Fast and Furious program was started by the Bush administration and there's only so much time in the day to clean up 8 years of dreck.

Further, it's stunningly hypocritical for right-wingers to bash the administration for loose guns when you all advocate the relaxation of gun laws, or no gun laws at all.

If we had the gun control laws of other countries, we wouldn't even need a program like Fast & Furious regardless of its provenance.

Im not bashing the admin for loose guns. What I am bashing them for is the fact they were using this program to try to get public opinion turned in favor of gun control.

Arpaio is not personally responsible for any "civil rights" violations of non-citizens I am quite sure there are deputies out there.....Ya know "bad apples" that have a personal vendetta against mexicans or brown folks.

Like I said....I have experienced the Maricopa County Jail system here and its not pleasant experience. In fact it was the most terrifying experience of my life. I should have not chosen to drink and drive. I was treated just as badly as a car thief, drug trafficer and low level murderer. According to MCSO if you are in jail you are a criminal and there generally is no distinction on what your crime is.
