"The Senate has introduced a bipartisan bill tripling funding for President Bush’s program to fight HIV/AIDS. The $50 billion budget over five years would go toward the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), which is set to expire in September.

The legislation, however, is being held up by Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) and six other conservative senators...."

It is long past time to end the ridiculous practice of allowing some idiot senator with an agenda to put a "hold" on anything. Jesse Helms paralyzed the Senate for nearly 20 years with that tactic.

The Republicans didn't permit or respect any holds the Democrats put on during the period 2001-2006. I say screw 'em right back.

Not much of a C-SPAN watcher, but what is a "hold?" Is it a threat of filibuster?

Since they are the minority party
thats basically all they can do

Little note.... Since the democrats took power
the republicans have filibustered more bills than in any similar time period in the history of congress

A "hold" is a courtesy that has historically been extended to senators, allowing any one of them to block any further progress of a bill basically forever until he or she removes the hold. Jesse Helms used his hold to prevent the confirmation of most of Clinton's judicial appointees, with the result that an unusually high number of these judgeships were vacant when Bush took office, which then permitted him to pack the appellate courts even more thoroughly than an incoming president generally gets to do.

Doesn't most of this aid go to poor countries, to help them, since aides has reached nearly epedemic proportions in some areas? It must be nice for these lawmakers to be on "RIGHT" side of issues like this. Must make them feel great upholding the principles of the christian right for our great christian nation. YOU GO REPUGS !!!!!! SHEEEESH !!!!

    I just read this update:

The seven conservative Republicans are critical of the program's higher spending level and prevention programs that include condom promotion

And here are all of the names of the folks holding things up: Tom Coburn, Jim DeMint, Jeff Sessions, Saxby Chambliss, David Vitter, Jim Bunning, Richard Burr

ooooo lookey David "diapers" Vitter is part of the bunch.

I am not suprised by Senator Tom Coburn's negative actions concerning more funding for HIV/AIDS prevention, Coburn is from Oklahoma, a right wing, red republican state. He probably believes all the baseless hype that AIDS is some form of death sentence from God for both drug addicts and gay men. Go figure.
