Fear of getting sick.

I rarely get sick [cold, flu etc]but when I do, I always look like death because it usually hits hard. As a gay man I can't help but be paranoid that any time I look unhealthy, the people around me are assuming it's hiv or aids. Especially my mother and co workers. It's awful. I already hate getting sick, but ever since I came out it has been worse. I feel like I have to tell people "I DON'T HAVE AIDS, IT'S STREP THROAT!"

Does anyone else feel this way? I hope I'm not alone.

I seem to recall having some of those thoughts when AIDs first came out. Probably just some vestigial internalized homophobia. But those years have past. Now I just worry that if I were to break a bone, I'd fear someone might think I've developed osteoporosis.

Despite having "safe" encounters, I still get paranoid every time I fall ill that it could be seroconversion. Doesn't help that the symptoms are pretty much the same as a regular flu.

Anways, though, sounds a bit more like you may be projecting your concerns onto others, rather than them having legitimate concerns about your HIV status. Most people don't think too deeply about the cause of other peoples' illnesses (except your mom, but moms are allowed to be extra concerned and paranoid about their kids' well being).

I know I hate it when someone assumes I'm thinking something. Relax, and wash your hands more often.

Oh god, I just turned you OCD.

I'm not sure I was clear enough. I don't get sick often but when I do it's usually pretty bad. I get dark circles under my eyes and I am already pale and I just look like death. I didn't say it was a logical paranoia but it's there. I'm SURE most people wouldn't ASSUME I have hiv/aids but it's still something that crosses my mind.

Get tested for HIV every three months, you should do that anyway. That might help to relieve your anxiety.

Maybe looking up the symptoms of HIV would help? Often there aren't any for a few years. So if you had a negative HIV test within the last three months its extremely unlikely your immune system was that compromised.

Other than that, how do you take care of yourself when you are sick? Rest and fluids? Or do you just sit up and worry icon_razz.gif

I don't think you are a hypochondriac because you don't actually believe that you are really sick. You just think that everyone assumes you are sick because of the way you look. You seem to be more concerned about what people think about you rather than how sick you are. It's something you can work on, but you may need to talk to someone professional to work through it.

Four magical words will drive your fears away:
    Fuck. What. Others. Think.

    *POOF*

Now eat lots of Oranges, wash your hands regularly and don't touch your eyes or mouth during the peak sick season.

I don't see how you could think you have HIV since you have a bf unless one of you is cheating not using protection.....

Never had that kind of fear of them thinking that, but when I am sick... I worry about thoes that I know (even worse the one's I don't know about) that do have immune system probems like HIV. HIV seems to have been showing its nasty ass around in my world lately. A few of my closest friends have come out ot me telling me they have it and it's been very hard when they tell me but now I think about things like covering my mouth, washing my hands... you know things I did before but now more often.

Luckily, I'm rarely sick - haven't even had a cold for well over a year. My biggest fear about getting sick is that it would stop me going to the gym icon_eek.gif

If you are around people that stupid, have some fun with it. Go stand next to them and cough, use their bathroom or ask for a glass of water.

Getting sick is a sign of a bigger problem than AIDS... it sounds like... *gulp* you're human. icon_wink.gif

People get sick--some often, some rarely. I'm the same way as you. I rarely get sick, but when I do, I get hit hard. However, I am not paranoid that people think I have AIDS.

It sounds like your mother and her friends need some information.

Tens of millions of people across the planet have the disease. Most of whom don't have a chance in hell because they have no access to and/or cannot afford life-extending drugs. Many children are doomed to early deaths because of situations out of their control.

And you have a fear of getting sick because obviously un-educated people think you MIGHT have AIDS.

    How sad for you.
