When guys ask you for fitness/supplement tips, do you give it to them? Why or why not.

    I've been thinking about this for a while and this has been in my head, but I didn't have a chance to post it, until a guy in my lab asked me today for fitness tips (mainly about weight-loss, because he's known me for a while and he saw my weight-loss journey) and he told me he's thinking about getting in shape for his wedding and honeymoon this coming June or something like that. So I sat down with him during lunch and we went over his nutrition today. Tomorrow I will probably sit down with him again to go over his fitness patterns and supplements that he's been using. I actually felt good about it until I was talking to an acquaintance at the gym later today (who is a persona trainer) and he told me that it's best not to share your "secrets" with other people, because since I had to figure out many things the hard way and tweaked them on my own, why should someone just come and take what I have learned.

    Now, I am a pretty generous person, and I have no problem offering what I have learned about fitness and nutrition up to this point. I know that I may not be as ripped and/or buff as many of the guys on the site, and there is plenty more to be learned and perfected on my part. But I don't see any problem sharing the weight-loss / fitness experiences that I've had, as a way of providing reference to other guys who wish to get into better physical shape and become healthier.

    Of course I always tell the guys who asked for my advice that "This is what I did. It worked for me; I lost 35lbs with it with and I kept it off for about two years now. I do not know whether or not it will also work for you, but I know it is for sure safe." Because for me, safety and health are the most important thing.

    What are your thoughts on this?

    That's a very bizarre attitude for a trainer to have.

    My good friend is an excellent trainer and he gives people advice and tips all the time. As long as you're not trying to swindle a free training session out of him, it's no big deal.

    Your trainer buddy is a little too paranoid, imo. They're not sacred mysteries that you have to horde until someone passes through fire or something.

    I think the idea of keeping things a secret is stupid. There's a difference between attaining knowledge, and applying it. I can tell a guy how to do squats. But he still has to do them himself and figure out the right form, technique, and so on.

    Besides, who cares if the guy next to you has a better body? Fitness should be a personal goal and not a competition. If not, then get one of these and hop on that stage..

    My thoughts? Anyone who thinks any form of education should be shrouded in secrecy is an elitist maniac, or a bit paranoid.

    Talking to others, and doing our own research, are both valid ways of learning new things.

    I've never taken any crazy supplements or anything asides from creatine powder and protein powders kinda stuff,,,,,BUT when any1 talks about or asks about routines and specific things i do or something, i love telling them, bcz it feels good to know that you're helping them doing something they're obviously also passionate about, if they're going out of their way to ask you, cz for some working out, espesially weight loss is hard is personal. And maybe one day they can help you out when you need it!

    Fitness advice: yes. It's what i do, working on personal trainer certification so I do it in a more professional capacity


    Supplement advice: depends on situation. technically, unless a personal trainer has a dietary/nutrition cert or license, they shouldn't be recommending supplements. Some supplements can cause problems with certain medical conditions and/or medications. I would send a client to a registered dietician.

    If someone asks me what i take, I might say, but mention just because i take some, the same supplements might not be right for them.
