Scanning Reflective Materials

    Two musical anthologies with "metalic" covers were recently purchased. Attempts to scan the covers have not captured the reflective nature of the original covers. This I suspect is due to the covers reflecting the scanner light rather than absorbing it. Anybody know of any techniques that can be used to capture the reflective nature of the covers?

    Scan it as usual. Then make corrections in Photoshop. However, if you want to capture the reflective properties of the "metallic" surface, then I would suggest using a digital camera instead. You can prop the objects up somehow, against a dark background. Set up a digital camera on a tripod. Light up the objects with a couple of bright light sources. And snap away. You might have to experiment a little to capture the right exposure and white balance.

    Or if you have the time, you can build one of these..

    it'll depend on what kind of "reflective qualities" these cases have.

    if it's mirror you wont be able to capture it with a scanner.

    If it's something like a glitter you'll have poor capture.

    If it's metal sheet again you'll have poor capture.

    Scanners are really only designed to capture colours produced from prints with regular types of CYMK inks.

    The photography tripod would be your better bet.

    Or scan it in and replace the affected areas in photoshop.

    The scanner is picking up specular reflectance.

    These guys are right. A camera is the only way.
