I've been about 5 times - I've got friends in PE. I usually fly to Cape Town and drive to PE (I managed to do over 3000km in 2 weeks last time by zig-zagging around the N2 instead of going straight there).

I have a friend from South Africa, but going there to visit him would be kinda stupid since he lives in Tampa.

South Africa is really awesome, I wish more foreigners would visit but if I have a look at the places people have been South Africa never seems to be one of them.

I'd love to go back. The last time I was there was in 1997 and things were very, very unsettled. They were downright scary in Joburg. In fact I was in SA when I woke up to the news of Princess Diana's death. Cape Town was amazing, but maybe more importantly, every single person I met was fantastic. I was there in 1996 as well and was lucky enough to tour the country both years.

I'd go back in a heartbeat!

I used to live there for a number of years. It's a great country, especially if you are into nature and wildlife. With the FIFA world cup, the infrastructure and public transport has been much better developed in certain areas, although it would still be also impossible to travel around without a car. Cape Town is probably the most popular tourist destination, and particularly gay friendly.

Drakensberg (mountain range) has the highest peak in South Africa, and it has spectacular views. Kruger National Park is a must for wildlife viewing, and Pretoria has a comparatively peaceful city life despite being one of the major cities in South Africa.

Beware of criminals and pickpockets, and it would be better if you know someone who can guide you; there are still many sketchy areas which tourists should avoid.

I've been often and always enjoy it. The beauty of the land, the 400 years of history, that our Winter is their Summer. There are only two reasons not to go. First, the flights take more than 14 hours. Second, crime is a problem.

Wonderful place for a vacation, but you need to be aware of the length of the trip and the level of crime.

    I've been twice.
First time I did an internship in Jo'burg. Then I went to Cape Town around 2005.
I loved it. I liked Jo'burg as it was quite a vibrant party city but it could have changed though. I went clubbing and found it pretty mixed with a surprising number of gays.

Cape Town: I loved the city and the beach life and the food! Went to one gay club which was ok.
Would go back if I can ignore the 12 hour flight

Yesterday, I just booked my 2nd trip to Cape Town for my birthday, in early September for 10 days. I LOVE Cape Town! On my last trip, I did the 12 hour blue train ride, (which I've heard no longer runs) from Cape Town to Johanesburg! Both are gay friendly cities. The people are WONDERFUL! Going via London for my 4 British Airways flights, to keep Emerald status for next year!

    Cheers,

    Sean
