So, considering trying to take a 'Gay' vacation next year, not sure where to go or what to do.

Considered a cruise, but time frame doesn't work - unless I want to go to the Baltic Sea, thanks - but no thanks.

Considered Atlantis Resort, looks dull... and doesn't look like it's filling up at all!

Looked on gay travel websites, they only seem to promote 'gay day's' and pride events, but there really doesn't seem to be much else out there.

I'd love to take a gay vacation where there will be a variety of people and things to do, food, dancing, drinking and a crowd!

    Would prefer warmth and sun!

    Recommendations? Thoughts?

With a friend, I just want to go somewhere warm with things to do and a gay nightlife and day life.

Considering April/May of 2012 for a week or so.

That's an ideal time for Key West, Florida, with lower lodging rates after approx April 15, the weather warm and moderate.

You have a sandy ocean beach there, warm water, gay bars & clubs, gay guest houses (a number clothing optional), even a gay tram tour of the city. Rainbow flags fly everywhere. Take a schooner cruise to see the famous sunset over the Gulf. Visit the Hemingway House, the Truman Little White House, Mel Fisher's Spanish treasure museum. I could keep you so busy with touristing you'd be exhausted. Or just lay out naked by the pool under the palms and veg with a drink. I'm at your disposal.

If you're wanting to stay in the States, i would think a 5 day weekend in South Beach/Miami area would more than suffice!

Sample this, with video. Typical of Key West gay guesthouses, this one nicely situated in the center of Old Town, near all the attractions. I've been here, the images are accurate.

Just thought I'd mention that Mr Gay World should be hosted in South Africa next year. We have lovely weather here, quite a large gay community and there are wonderful sites to see. For what its worth- were definitely worth a "look at".

Please consider San Diego. I might sound biased, since I live here, but the main reason I live here is that I fell in love with the place the first time I set foot here.

San Diego is relaxed, but it has a large gayburb (Hillcrest) with tons of outstanding restaurants, great bars and dance places. We have one of the best clothing optional beaches in the nation (and I have seen a lot of those). We have hot surfers EVERYWHERE. Plus LA is 1.5h North, while the non-scary parts of Mexico are just 1h South.

The only thing you need to remember about San Diego is that you absolutely don't want to visit in May - June, when it's cloudy all the time.

hehe - agreed on the May-June bit. Definitely NOT the time to be there. On the plus side though, if you run out of money while there, you can always do porn.

South Beach has been overrun with drunken straight people for about a decade now. All the gays moved up to Ft. Laud.

The classic "gaycations" in the US are:

SF - weather is best during the Folsom St. Fair -- don't come in the summer, you'll freeze your ass off

Provincetown - stay for a week in August, you'll get 2/3 good weather days

Fire Island - more reliable weather than P-Town in August.

There's others in the US, but they don't rank with the three classics above. Chicago/Boys Town is great, but it's more about Chicago than the "gay". Ditto NYC/W. Village-Chelsea-HK -- it's really about NYC. Same for LA/Weho and SD. All great cities with great gayborhoods, but compared to SF, P-Town, and Fire Island, it's really the city, not the gay, for those places. Same goes for non-US cities, like Paris, London, and Berlin - the cities themselves are so awesome, I don't think they can't really be called "gaycation" cities.

Outside the US, the classics (IMHO) are:

Sydney during Mardi Gras is fantastic, and would be my number one choice.

Mykonos -- never been myself, but dream of it.

Puerto Vallarta -- never been either, but gets great reviews from many picky travelers I know.

Costa Rica is awesome, but I don't really consider this "gay" like many folks. The country is just amazing by itself. Ditto Thailand -- a lot of guys have "sexcations" here, but to me, the country is so much more than that narrow reputation.

    One person's opinion!

It's not exactly warm and sunny, but I believe few places measure up to Montreal

Agree with P-town - my favorite vacation spot - July and August can be quite warm - swimmable waters- very gay on the beach and in town; good resturants + the entire cape is vacationland; some dancing; some gay night clubs; plus art galleries; If you are into that sort of place - lots of Gay B&Bs and guesthouses in the West (quiet) End. Not too much sex on the beach anymore, though there is some (park patrols).

SF - too cold - not the warm and sunny you wanted (I live there).

Outside the U.S. - would add Sitges, Spain, within shouting distance and a 1/2 hour train ride from Barcelona. Very Gay. Also the island, Ibeza, Spain. Not exclusively gay, but gay enough.

My 5th year going there in late April time frame, so I give what A_D said +10,000 points!

Thanks for your confirmation. And if you make it 6 years perhaps you guys could meet up. Hell, maybe we'll go back down, too, we do about every-other month, anyway, and April really is cheaper. And could also meet another RJer who lives in KW, whom we've seen our last 3 times there to have dinner with.

I hate to ask or even mention this, but I've been told Key West is kind of dirty and overrun with straight people too? Is this accurate?

My first choice for a gay vacation is Provincetown. Key West is all right, also, but I prefer P-town.

First, no more dirty than P-town. In fact they run the street sweepers most mornings, something I've never seen on the Cape. But like P-town, KW has its own local charm, what I call "ramshackle." Neither of them are like the idealized perfection of Disney World's "Main Street, USA."

As for straights, both places have plenty of them, difficult to keep them out. Although when I was in P-town August last year most of the tourists seemed to be older lesbians, like they were having a convention or something.

What KW does have more of is exclusively male guest houses, a number of them clothing optional, with private grounds. And gay bars with strippers. And palm trees to lie under by the pool, naked if you wish, in lovely warm weather most of the year. And much warmer ocean water, whereas the water around the Cape is rather chilly for much of the summer.

I've been going to P-town since 1965, KW since 1973. Both have good features and I like both, but based on the OP's stated specs, I think KW is what he wants.

Memorial Day weekend TONS of gays go to Pensacola, FL. It's not a big city so the time is all about the beach during the day and going to the bar at night. It can be as mild or as wild as you make it.

Check out the Ruby's video, too. They're all accurate, I've been to every one of these places myself. Now obviously they pose good-looking guys for the pics, so don't expect all the guests to look so attractive. Sometimes the guests will look like... me. icon_razz.gif And not everyone will be taking all their clothes off at every opportunity. It's the luck-of-the-draw who's staying there when you do, unpredictable like the weather.

Contact me for additional details on each. There are quite a few more KW guesthouses at which I haven't stayed, and can't offer any opinion. Google for Key West gay guesthouses.
