I would recommend filtering out a list of possible names by considering the position of the major vowel. Vowels with are frontal as deemed by IPA would be more attractive.

Ok... Tyler, Tucker, Ashton, Kyle, Braden, etc..... those kind of names have got to go. Those aren't real guys names. I like names like Mike, Justin, Rob, Tony, Mark, Adam.

In the words of George Carlin.. "I'll bet you 10 times out of 10, a Nicky, a Vinnie, and a Tony, will kick the sh#t out of a Tyler, a Tucker, and a Todd."

Thank goodness! Nothing against the popular names, but a unique name is way cooler.

I HIGHLY recommend they visit these websites.

www.babynamewizard.com/voyager
www.babynames1000.com/

Use the tool on the right side of the page (for that second website) to search by year.

Hmm. Glendon could be cool...

Please do not allow them to name the baby Apple or Suri. LOL. Seriously, celebrites are not really good at naming babies...

I'd like to suggest that if you're going to give a child a very unusual first name, it would be best to give the child a very standard name as a middle name. It's entirely possible that the kid won't feel the same way about having a highly unusual name as his/her parents, and a very standard middle name gives the child the option to go by a more standard one if (s)he wishes. If the parents want to go with Canyon for their son, that's their choice, but it's a good idea to add a middle name like James or William or something.

I agree... though what do you do if you want to give your child a non-common first name and then also a middle name from one of your parents? My middle name could in no way be mistaken for a first name, as it is my grandfather's middle name, and his grandfather's last name. I suppose I lucked out with my first name being mainstream.

For some reason I'm a big fan of Beckett. It seems pretty unique to me.

I'm really digging some of the other choices you all have given though. I hadn't thought of a lot of them.

I think many parents forget an important part when coming up with a name, and that is that the name must sound good when he or she's having sex.

For instance, Moe is not a good choice. I mean it rhymes with "oh", "Oh, Moe!" and when the partner realizes it rhymes they'll laugh and that's not hot. Or something that just doesn't go with "oh", like "Oh Shmuel!".

Ok, tell them to remember that "unique" can easily turn to "freakish" on the playground. Nothing against unique names, I've known some lovely ones (Ogion is a personal favorite).

Just remember that if it's TOO wierd, or doesn't shorten to something (Ogion apparently shortens to Ogi - pronounced Oh-gi) it can be hell at school. And it's not always the names you immediately think. It's better to be Ogion Fullford than Dwayne Pipe (yeah, I knew a guy with that name, for real).

I've always thought Chad was such a preppy name. It belongs at the boat house. This coming from a guy who has had to live with the name Chad his entire life.

I'm fond of Irish/Celtic names. Morgan, Aidan, Bain, Brendan, Cedric, Connor.

A name with meaning, specifically cultural meaning, is more important to me, however.

His first would be Caeser, since my brith name is Alexander.

Alexander conquored the world first... then Caeser did it... hence the name choice.

pakgreekguy saidgod most of the names are suuuch a snooore!!(with all due respect of course);-), but i do like Giovanni, Marcello, Nicco, i would also include Marrius, and Magnus, Armand

Giovanni: Italian form of Johannes, see JOHN: English form of Iohannes, which was the Latin form of the Greek name Ιωαννης (Ioannes), itself derived from the Hebrew name יוֹחָנָן (Yochanan) meaning "YAHWEH is gracious".
(this one was mentioned a few times...)

Marcello: Italian form of MARCELLUS: From the Roman family name Marcellus which was originally a pet form of MARCUS: Roman praenomen, or given name, which was probably derived from the name of the Roman god MARS: Possibly related to Latin mas "male" (genitive maris).

Nicco: Italian form of NICHOLAS: From the Greek name Νικολαος (Nikolaos) which meant "victory of the people" from Greek νικη (nike) "victory" and λαος (laos) "people".

Marrius: Something tells me this was from a novel...

Magnus: Roman cognomen meaning "great" in Latin.

Armand: Again I think from a line of novels but none the less...French form of HERMAN: Means "army man", derived from the Germanic element heri "army" combined with man "man".

So would the names you've chosen be considered cool/hot boy names?

Oh here's a few funny ones to go with the surname (Rider):

Slow

Low

Deep

Hard

Soft

Mean

Yay! Someone suggested my name (Marshall). I've only met 3 or 4 other Marshalls in my life, so it's definitely unique. It's a very soft name though (soft rolling sounds) so it needs a surname with a crisp snap to make it work.

It's kind of cool to see "Mark" come up quite a bit as a cool / hot name!

I always liked Kevin, Kyle, or Troy for guys.

Well, if they haven't picked a name by the time the boy is born, on the Birth Certificate they can just put, under NAME: "Fill In Later" and call him Phil for short!

I don't really care for the middle name of Wagner because it has an "er" and so does their last name of Rider. It just doesn't flow as nicely (in my mind). But, the baby is the cutest!

Nathan guarantees he'll be gay, as do Ryan and David. Still, these are solid names and many of the guys I've met with them were attractive. I also love Jonathan as a name. Personally I can't stand surnames being used as given names. It's so WASPy.

Stick to the old standard -- can't go wrong with a Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, James, Thomas, Robert, etc. Who knows what Jason and Justin and Cody etc will sound like 40 or 50 years from now. Personally I can't imagine being a little kid with a Granny Ashley or Grandpa Tyler. Give the kid a "fashionable" middle name if you want.

I like having a unique name. When I hear people talking about me, I know they're talking about me. And I don't ever recall having issues on the playground (and only once did I get flack for playing the flute, and well, turns out that what the guy said was right, so what's the big deal?)

Speaking of Jewish names, I once met this old geezer named Sean Ferguson. He had been prepped on what to say when he got to Ellis Island, but as he neared the front of the line he started getting nervous. Sure enough, when the clerk said: "Name?" he totally froze up, slapped his forhead... and said: "Shoyn, fargesn" (there you go, I forgot!)

Becket Shane/Sean Rider?
